During Samhain, the veils between this world and the other were the thinnest allowing the spirits to pass through. Families invited lost loved ones and ancestors into their homes to share in their celebrations and in order to avoid harm from evil spirits, they would wear costumes and masks to disguise themselves. The Christians believe that Samhain was a pagan holiday and due to the festival’s association with death both, Celtics and druids, were considered devil worshipers.
