To me, international-mindedness means being aware, accepting, and developing an appreciation for all the different cultures found in the world. Through the process of acquiring an international-mindedness, a person also becomes more aware of who she/he is. Another side effect of it is the growth of the feeling of empathy towards others and the increase of compassionate gesture being done to others. However, international-mindedness is not only about people, it also helps to be more conscious of global issues.

The globalization has brought upon the need to no longer focus on one’s own small environment but to broaden his/her horizon and have an almost unlimited choice of cause to learn about and get involve with.

Within Biology, the topics of the effect of human on the environmental will help to educate on global citizenship. Learning, analyzing, and exchanging ideas and opinions on the cause and the effects of people on global warming, climate change, acid rain, and water pollution and depletion will provide a background for them to work on finding ways at the social and technical levels to improve these problems on a local basis as well as globally. Students should also become aware of the effects and ethics related to GMOs, usage of stem cell research and cloning, which are all manmade products and be able to take position and defend it.
