Self Sufficiency

"A few days after mom and dad brought me home, I cooked myself some hotdogs."
I chose this picture to represent self sufficiency because the picture shows kids living in poverty with multiple layers of clothes because they are cold. There are food wrappers and the kids appear alone. It chose the quote because this happened after Jeanette had just gotten out of the hospital where she was admitted after getting burned when she was cooking for herself. She didn't want to bother her mom, so she cooked on the stove again. She did the same thing that had resulted in her severe burns. Her mom wouldn't help her so she had to do it herself.

Chaos and Order

"We'd make friends with them, but not close friends, because we knew we'd be moving on sooner or later."
I chose this picture and quote for chaos and order because the Walls' family was always moving -running away- and the family would be on the run, living outside or in their cars. They never set down roots anywhere. The picture shows a family living in their car. It makes me think of the Walls family.

Unconditional Love

"But you always loved your old man, didn't you?" " I did, Dad", I said. "And you loved me."
I chose this picture and quote because this to me is the basis of the memoir. The relationship between Rex Walls and Jeanette. Jeanette always would love her father although he continuously disappointed her with his actions and broken promises. She realized that to grow, she needed to get away from him. Once she was away from his she was able to see who he was and she realized that she loved him. The picture is a father & daughter.

Forgiveness

"He know I had a soft spot for him the way no one else in the family did, and he was taking advantage of it."
I chose this picture and quote as a demonstration of forgiveness, because Jeanette was always forgiving her father for the things he did when he was drinking. Rex Walls would get drunk and then do all sorts of terrible things, in the end Jeanette would make excuses for him and then end up forgiving him.

Fantasy versus Reality

"He carried around the blueprints for the Glass Castle wherever we went, and sometimes he'd pull them out and let us work on the design for our rooms."

I chose this photo and this quote to demonstrate fantasy versus reality. Rex Walls was always telling his kids that he was going to strike it rich and then he would have the money to build the Glass Castle. When the kids were younger they believed him and only when their dad would disappoint them time after time, did they realize that the plans for the Glass Castle were fantasy and what they were actually living and experiencing was reality.

Non-conformity

"Everyone assumed I was a normal person." "It was weird."
I chose this picture and this quote because the Walls kids were always seen as different and were outsiders. This quote was significant because when Lori went away to camp, all of the kids were creative like her and for once she felt normal.
