As a teacher, understanding these varied learning styles can guide me in creating lessons that offer all students a fair opportunity to succeed by tapping into their unique strengths.

Also, how to I bring more music into the classroom when not musically talented?

So, I have actually taken this class before. For some personal reasons, I was unable to finish the work for it, and am now needing to retake it. This is to say, I feel like I know a lot about this subject already. My first time taking this class, I learned a lot about culturally responsive pedagogy and how art can play an important role in making learning accessible to students of all backgrounds and abilities.

I guess, having taken this class already, I am mostly eager to know how it will be different this time around. I think this is a really big, fascinating topic, that I imagine will probably look pretty different being taught by a different teacher with a different relationship to the arts and to teaching. I am eager to learn even more ways art can be utilized in the classroom, especially when we as teachers are often working within fairly rigid curricula.

I want to be totally honest: the way I learn best is pretty much the opposite of these weekend Zoom intensives. I have ADHD and I find any class on Zoom to be an enormous struggle, but especially ones this long. I always do my best, but I wanted to be upfront about the fact that I don't really enjoy this format of class, and find it very very hard to learn within. I have also struggled somewhat at Lesley with many teachers having rather unclear expectations in their assignments, and having extremely flexible deadlines. I find I work best when expectations are clear and specific, and when there are real deadlines I need to work within.

I have appreciated taking this time to think more deeply about how our identities color and influence how we create lessons and interact with students, and how we can interrupt harmful practices and include healing ones. The idea of infusing joy and harnessing the arts is so appealing to me and I have really enjoyed all of the art activities we've undertaken in class. I think the ways art was included even in our zoom classes has motivated me to include art in simple but meaningful ways. One key takeaway that really resonated with me is the idea that children learn when they feel safe and sharing parts of our own identity with students can help foster the authentic relationships needed for them to feel safe.
