The area was originally by Wurundjeri Indeginous Australians of the Kulin nation. However, in 1837, Europeans settled in Boroondara. The name derives from the Aboriginal word, meaning "where the ground is thickly shaded". The first local Government was established in 1854. It incorporated Hawthorn, Kew and Camberwell.
