         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Born: 1550 in Zacatecas,  Mexico</li><li>Died: 1626 in Guadalcanal,    Seville, Spain at age 76</li><li>Explored for Spain  from November 1598-18 April 1608.</li><li>He explored on Viceroy Velasco's request to explore and colonize present day Mexico, to capture Capt. Francisco Leyva de Bonilla, and to spread Catholicism.</li><li>Onate founded New Mexico and settlements in the province.</li><li>Onate was from a family ofSpanish Basque colonists and silver mine owners.</li><li>In 1614, Onate was exiled from P.D. New Mexico and charged with mismanagement and excessive cruelty. This was do to his order that the right foot be chopped off of 24 Acoma Warriors in 1599.</li><li>Someone cut off Bronze statue in Onate Monument Visitors Center's right foot and left a note saying, "Fair is fair."<figure class="attachment attachment-preview"><img src="https://cdn.thinglink.me/api/image/733166547723354112/230/230/thumbnail" width="230" height="230"><figcaption class="caption"></figcaption></figure></li></ul>]]></description>
