I created an organisation entitled Report Arc. The app's main incentive is to help reduce online harassment by encouraging social media users to partner with us. The user will report any online hate or harassment they see and upload evidence on the app. Our team will evaluate the evidence and if deemed severe will lead to the termination of said user's account. By partnering with social media sites such as Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok we hope to make the online community safer. Users will receive vouchers in-app for every successful report they create. I decided to create this company as I believed not enough was being done to prevent online harassment and bullying online. Many victim's lives were greatly affected and the perpetrator's accounts will remain active and they will continue to bully others. According to 2020 statistics, the most common reason for not reporting online experiences of bullying was because the victim did not believe it was important, another common one was believing that it would make things worse (Office for National Statistics, 2020). Victims may believe that it doesn’t affect them at first but then it starts to become worse which is something my company is passionate about educating people on and resolving this issue.

References

Office for National Statistics, (2020).

During my research and creation of this company what I found particularly interesting was people's reasoning for not reporting online harassment as well as the specific groups that it impacted. I didn’t expect it to be something that impacted older people as well as young people, people over the age of 50 still being impacted by online harassment was something that I didn’t expect until I researched more. What was particularly thought-provoking was looking into the effects of online bullying on people's mental health and how it was leading to an increased suicide rate in young people. What was even more shocking was that it was minority groups such as Transgender, Gay, and Bisexual people who were being impacted the most. What I found challenging was finding statistics for people's reasoning as to why they didn’t report harassment, I had to look for a while to find a credible source as many sites would have been likely trying to push an agenda or included secondary data, so I needed to make sure it was not biased and primary data collection. I found it very easy to reason why I decided to make this Business as improving online safety is something that I am passionate about.

The purpose of my organisation is primarily to spread awareness of the effects of bullying and to actively encourage people to not only report harassment but to encourage others to report it also. My app's primary focus is on not being a ‘’bystander’’ and to take action to help the online community become safe for the young and old. My app also gives a chance for people with a passion for tech to use their skills positively and get to work with our app and big companies in the industry such as Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook. People are mostly targeted on these sites, statistics show that in 2022 42% of people were cyberbullied on Instagram, 37% on Facebook, and 31% on Snapchat (Broadandsearch, 2022). This is why we focus on working with users who frequently use these sites. My company’s main goal is to reduce online harassment if not eradicate it on these sites by removing the accounts and new accounts they may create we can put a stop to repeat online cyberbullying. This will give people work experience and a chance to earn money as well as make a difference.

References

Broadbandsearch (2022) All the Latest Cyberbullying Statistics 2022.

A law that would be important to be aware of when starting this organisation is the Online Safety Act. This online safety bill is a bill that has been put in place by the UK Government and is likely to impact not only ‘Big Tech’ social media platforms but also smaller platforms and online forums. The legislation will require companies to remove illegal content quickly, prevent children from accessing harmful and age-inappropriate content, enforce age limits and age-checking measures, and provide parents and children with accessible ways to report problems online (Lloyd-Taylor, 2023). My company will need to consider this legislation by making sure that making reports is easy and accessible. We must make it our mission to remove illegal content but only allow the moderators employed to be responsible for reporting bullying and harassment. Another important law would be the Employment Law. Our company must make sure that all content moderator employees are 18+ as some content may be considered disturbing and protecting children’s exposure to hate and harassment online is imperative. It is also an important law to consider as we will need to ensure that users are being paid fairly and at least minimum wage based on how long they are working.

References

Lloyd-Taylor, Geraint (2023).

Accounting is important in my organisation as it is a limited company. My company will be required to pay Corporation tax so will need to keep track of annual accounts such as a balance sheet, profit and loss account, notes about the accounts, and directors. My company will need to send statutory accounts to all shareholders, people who can go to company general meetings, the company's house, and HMRC for tax returns. These Statutory accounts must meet either international financial reporting standards or New UK generally accepted accounting practice standards (GOV.UK, N.D). Having accurate accounts is important as my accountants will need to use the profit and loss account to work out my company’s financial position and the measures to take - If it is in debt, I will have to liquidate the company’s assets and if it is making a profit, I will be able to expand the business by investing more into marketing. Tracking income and expenditure is vital in a growing business as it will help my company to deduce what areas we should reduce investment in and which areas we should invest more into such as research and development.

References

Gov.UK, (N.D).
