In some way Chris Keller lives in a word of his own throughout most of the play. Chris, who came back from the army into the arms of his family and the post World War II society, soon learns that getting used to “normal life” again isn’t so easy. In war time, Chris as a commander had goals and missions that were a big part of his identity, based on the principles of dignity, brotherhood and sacrifice for the other. Chris’s idealism helped him to stand the war. When Chris went back, the things he fought for, and the ideals his friends lost their lives for were not apparent in society.

The American dream embodies the freedom to succeed, to earn enough money to have all you want, to buy and own a business with minimal government intervention. However, sometimes people may use somewhat unethical methods in order to fulfill greed and selfish ambitions. Chris discovers that the brotherhood he had cherished in the war is now of the lowest of importance.

The need to protect freedom is what sent Chris, his brother, Larry, and ‘all the sons’ to the war zone, but when Chris is back home, he discovers that the ideals of the war are not applied in the mainland. And the huge sacrifice his friends made, now resembles a pedestrian car accident by the common man, rather than the heroic death for a war against evil. In the play, we witness the rebellion of Chris against society and against his parents, especially his dad Joe, who committed a wartime crime of manslaughter.

In my collage, which is a redefinition of the play, examples of the unhealthy, greedy lifestyle can be seen all around the background from, for example, brand new cars, new housing, jewelry, neon lights and more. Chris is seated upon a compass, a metaphor for his feelings of immorality for his family's style. And in addition to that, is the face of an old man, representing his dad, that Chris sits on in an attempt to represent Chris' rebellious feelings in society. On the top left, Ann’s head is placed opposing Chris, even though they have different opinions on the morality of the world, they are looking in the same direction. This signifies that Ann and Chris both want similar things;  both want to move on from Larry and get away from their parent’s influence. 

The broken plane is in the same spot where Larry’s fallen tree was in the play, creating a strong metaphor. Just like the tree represented Larry’s memory and the illusion that he was still “alive” for his family and especially his mother, the broken plane shows the painful truth of loss and the collapse of the lies that held the family together.

The planes in the sky remind us of World War II, which is an important part of the story. The American flag stands for patriotism, but it also makes us think about right and wrong and what a person owes to their family and to society.

I chose this design because it shows the difference between the perfect image on the outside and the hard truth underneath.

In the collage, you can find various objects that symbolize key themes from the play. For instance, the presence of airplanes and war-related items serves as a powerful reminder of the conflict between the pursuit of profit and the moral responsibility we hold toward others. Joe Keller, a central character, is deeply intertwined with this theme, as he produces faulty airplane parts that ultimately lead to tragic consequences. He must confront the stark reality that his decisions directly resulted in the loss of soldiers' lives.

You can also look at the American flag and symbols like a dollar bill in the collage, which represent the relentless pursuit of the American Dream—a central theme in the play that underlies Joe Keller's wartime crime. This quest for success and prosperity is intricately linked to the choices he makes and the moral compromises he faces. The collage beautifully captures the complexity and depth of the plot and its characters. War objects and airplanes serve as stark reminders of the heavy toll that economic success can take, often at the cost of human lives. Meanwhile, the American flag symbolizes both the ideals people strive for and the disappointments that can arise when those ideals are compromised. Additionally, the broken heart encapsulates the emotional pain and loss experienced by the characters, highlighting the tragic consequences of their actions. Together, these elements invite viewers to reflect on the broader implications of ambition, responsibility, and the sacrifices made in the name of success.

In my collage, I chose to put a tree in the middle of the design like the broken apple tree in the play (that represents Larry the M.I.A son) to show how much a small and usually meaningless object can have a strong meaning and connection to everything in the story. In the background, I chose to use purple because I learned that the color purple symbolizes a dream or a fantasy, since I wanted to show how much wishful thinking makes the characters act like they act (Kate with her dream that Larry would bel coming back from the war, Chris with his dream to marry Ann…)

When I wrote the name of the play, I chose to mark in a red color the word “son” in “sons” to empower the word, which actually speaks about Larry and his death. I also used an airplane image directed to the word “son” to show that he died because of the crime his father committed shipping out the cracked cylinder heads that killed 21 pilots from the American Air Force .In conclusion, the clouds and running people contribute to the dream illusion and it’s also a way of showing how everyone in the play is trying to run from themselves, like Joe with his crime and guilt.

The man is representing Joe Keller. Keller wanted to achieve success and gain money for his family, and he managed to do that. But, in the way he lost himself, lost his morals and he values. he went to a dark place, just like the man in the picture.

I choose to generate an image referring to the play theme of blood money, as it ingrained in the American dream of world war 2, as displayed in All of my sons. The image I created showcases the American flag, where the white in the flag is represented with dollars and the red with blood. Blood money is an expression referringto money that is obtained at the cost of another's life. In the play, Keller plant sends out cracked cylinder heads, knowingly, to use for war planes. Due to that, the dying of 21 pilots is caused. When Chris finds out it is Keller who is responsible to it, Keller says that all of the american businessman make profit of the war, which makes blood money inevitably intertwined with the american dream.
