Group Essay-----THE H.I. QUESTION: DID THE JAPANESE OCCUPATION CHANGE THE LIVES OR TEENAGERS OR NOT

Yes, the Japanese Occupation did change the lives of teenagers quite a lot.

This can be seen from the comparison about the health of the teenagers, Sources A and B. Under the British, they had good healthcare, and saw private doctors when they were sick, however, under the Japanese's rule, teenagers cannot even afford basic needs that prevents them from illness or injuries. These shows that due to the change of government, many issues that rose up affected teen's health.

Secondly, this can be seen from the comparison between the school life of teenagers, sources C and D. Before the war, they were able to learn English, and other academic subject.Under the war, the teenagers were only taught Japanese language. These shows that due to only the change in their government, they can only learn Japanese language which was what they initially had no idea of since they were not even Japanese.

Thirdly, this can be seen from the comparison between the leisure of teenagers. Source E states that before the war, teenagers watched movies often. However, during the war, source F states that they could only play traditional games. These shows that due to the war, there was an absence of technology in their leisure and their leisure uses more physical strength compared to before the war.

Fourthly, this can be seen from the fact that teenagers had to drop out of school during WW2 and was unable to continue with their education due to the closing of schools. On top of that, they had to feed themselves thus causing them to have to go to work, but it was not assured that the food that they get would fill their stomach. It can also be implied that they were being treated badly by their employer.

Lee Kin Lin, during the Japanese occupation, had to stop schooling as all the secondary schools were forced to shut down and thus, he began working for the first time in his life. As he started working, he faced a lot of new different problems and many changes. One of the changes and problem he had to face was that he always did not have enough food to keep him full and he had to live in constant fear for his life.
Source Origin: Celine Ackerman Blogspot
Date: 1942
