He painted several renditions of historical scenes and cultural significance. Other than painting portraits of the royal family he also painted portraits of notable european figures, commoners, and painted his masterpiece  Las Meninas in 1656. For the first quarter of the 19th century his work was a role model for realistic and impressionist painters specifically Édouard Manet. Since then other famous painters such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Francis Bacon have recreated some of his paintings in his honor. Some of his famous paintings include the The Surrender of Breda, Rokeby Venus, Portrait of Innocent X, Las Meninas, and Las Hilanderas.
