Here you need to explain that there are many different forms of Feminism ranging from Radical to Liberal and you might briefly stress how one focuses on the continuing patriarchal struggle whereas the other suggests there has been a great deal of progress and rejects a system of societal oppression. Indeed, many Feminist ideas of inequality are stressed as outdated and no longer relevant in the post modern age and are criticised by post modernist views that see choice as affecting all social groups, including women. The debate against Feminism needs to go further than saying it used to be correct but now it’s out of date and need to question the entire basis of the Feminist argument. Therefore the Functionalist view that suggests gender is biological and that is the basis of sexual division of labour in Society, should be discussed.

Gender differences are taught through socialisation as gender and gender roles are socially constructed.

There are 3 main types of feminism with different goals and ideas on how to achieve these goals.
Liberal feminists seek equal rights with men under the current system, achieving this is done through campaigning to remove obstacles that separate women from men.
Radical feminists believe women are held down by patriarchy (Coote and Campbell- social, economic and cultural systems that ensure male supremacy) to end this the system must be torn down and restarted.
Marxist feminists believe that women are victims of patriarchy and class exploitation

Parsons describes an expressive female which includes characteristics of warmth, security and emotional support, all of which occur naturally. This disputes Radical Feminism's argument that gender roles are socially constructed. In addition to this, males are naturally more achievement orientated in their instrumental role and due to the innate traits of the expressive female, she is able to relieve the stress he experiences. The family operates most efficiently when there is a clear cut sexual division of labour.
