In the Dystopian Elements handout, there are six examples of conflicts the protagonist/main character might got through. These are not the only conflicts the character might encounter, but just a start. Identify at least one internal conflict your main character is experiencing.
Example:
At the beginning of 1984, Winston, the protagonist, is feeling trapped. There is a great deal of describing the Big Brother posters and how the eyes seemed to follow people. In the apartment, Winston also is very deliberate about having his back to the telescreen or having his facial expression set before turning so the telescreen could "see" him and what he was doing. The layout of his apartment was described, but not with furniture, but as to what areas of the apartment could not be observed by the telescreen.
I also see Winston taking a stand against the establishment. Ignorance is valued and thinking as an individual is considered a crime. Winston buys a journal - illegally and goes to great lengths to find an old pen with which to write in the journal. Just writing/keeping a journal or diary is a punishable act, yet he goes to great lengths to begin to do so and in an area of the apartment that the telescreen cannot "see". This journal, I believe, is going to be an important aspect of Winston's journey.

Describe the setting of your Dystopian novel. Is it similar to anywhere you have visited, viewed, read about, heard about?

Example:
I am at the very beginning of 1984. The setting comes across as very urban and somewhat cold and desolate. I do not get the idea that it is winter. Rather, the descriptions lead me to think of an area that is bleak and lacking of trees, flowers, nature. The desolate description could also be more of the character's feelings toward the world he lives in.
pg. 5 "Outside, even through the window pane, the world looked cold."
pg. 6 "Down the street, little eddies of wind were whirling dust and torn paper into spirals, and though the sun was shining and the sky a harsh blue, there seemed to be no color in anything except the posters that were plastered everywhere."
As I am just at the beginning of the novel, I am not sure if the setting described is true for the entire world or just that city and/or group.

In my novel I am about one third in. So far I know that the story takes place in Portland Maine. I can conclude that it is about mid May at this moment.
pg. 1, It states, "I'm scheduled to have my procedure in exactly ninety-five days, on September 3. My birthday." Doing the math for this, that would make today May 31st. I also know that this sounds about like the right day because they just graduated.
pg. 105 "The air coming in the window doesn't make me feel better. It's even hotter outside." allows we to understand that it is a hot and humid day outside, in the month of May. From what I understand, the whole United States is included in this dystopia. There is however, a fence there the so called "Wilds" are kept away from this society. Inside the fence, all the houses are uniform and neatly alike.

In my novel I am seeing bureaucratic control. The society is being controlled by the government and patrol.
pg. 79 "Groups of regulators-both volunteer citizens and the actual regulators employed by the government-patrol the streets every night, looking for uncureds breaking curfew, checking the streets and houses for unapproved activity." Lena has lived here her whole life and understands that the government is doing everything for their own good. However, there are some people of the society who believe this is terribly wrong. The curfew thing is a common thing in our world today. Other than that, we are pretty free.

No way to avoid the procedure unless you lie. You must lie."
Lena trusted this boy named Alex with her family secret. He told her that he was cured, but in fact he was not cured. He was not even a resident of the society. He was a wild. Alex lied to Lena and he betrayed her. He dishonored her trust. She was also experiencing rebellion. She was in a lake with a boy! Lena knew it wasn't safe, but she was being rebellious against the laws and regulations.

I'm not thin, but not fat either. They only thing you could definitely say about me is this: I'm short."
Lena is a very kind hearted person, who always follows the rules. Our last chance to choose."
Hana (Lena's best friend) is trying to show her that their society has no choice of anything after they are cured. She is sick and tired of all these rules being made for her about what time she has to be home and what kind of music she can and can't be listening to. This party also happens to contain a multitude of uncureds and possibly invalids. This is the second one of these music parties she has attended. I don't know yet because I'm not far enough in my book, but I think the party may have gotten raided. I believe this because normally the town has a scheduled raid from the government and people in charge. Well on this particular night, the raiders weren't scheduled to come.
pg. 201 "This is a raid. Please do as you are commanded and do not try and resist..."
I believe that the party may have gotten caught, and that is what sent these raiders to come into attack to assure no houses were suspicious.

Lena has stepped so far out of her comfort zone. Alex has showed her his view on the world and where he lives. She is now adventuring out and owes all the thanks to Alex. She feels as if she belongs in this world, somewhere, somehow.
pg. 287 "Alex. I know I belong with Alex." This is a big step for her because before she was never even allowed to talk to boys outside of her family. Also, since she has gotten to be so close with Alex, Lena has begun to question everything she thought she used to know.

I believe that Lauren Oliver (author of my novel) used the fight for individuality throughout this novel. It is about a society where everyone does the same thing and follows the same rules. The society is a very clicky place. Everyone has their small groups where they all are practically the same. Once Lena learns about the Invalids she is in a battle of individuality as well as many others. It gets to the point where Lena just wants to run away, just to get away from this place.
pg. 374 "I want to run away with you. To the Wilds."
Lena just wants to be different and away from all the lies. The author is trying to tell us that it's okay to be different. Don't be like everyone else.
