What makes you want to watch a film?

60% of those asked said that the combination of all three options all contributed to the reason why they consume films. This tells me that the audience like to see popular actors playing lead roles in films and a well-known director(s) to brand the film. When creating my trailer I need to have noticeable (and good!) actors to play the main parts. If strong lead roles are portrayed, then the audience will be more entitled to watch my film/trailer.

The other 40% selected the 'other' option and most of those that selected that said that they didn't really mind who was in it (or created it) and were more into the actual quality and story line of the films they watched. So i have to make sure to include a unique story line and make my trailer look as professional as possible.

What would you do to find out about a new film?

The majority of those surveyed said they would watch the trailer(s) AND get opinions from peers. This goes to show how influential the power of socializing is and it can benefit a film's marketing or impact it negatively. I need to make sure that when marketing my film using my trailer, I engage the audience on first impressions and keep the consistency throughout. The results collected from this question have allowed me to come up with an idea that i can have some sort of montage to have hints of action from start to finis, Or, I can built up the action as the trailer goes on.

When genre of movies do you like the most?

I wanted to ask this question to help me to decide what genre my trailer is going to be. 60% chose action, 20% chose comedy and 10% chose horror and 10% chose romantic. From this i can clearly see that a new Action trailer would appeal to a more broad audience but I can also add in the element of comedy as well to make the level of my film promotion optimal. The idea of mixing comedy and action together was most favorable from the results of the next question. I can see that those surveyed preferred it when an action film had a comedic atmosphere. When asked why, one person even said that with comedy, 'you can enjoy the film even more because however you're feeling at that moment it can lighten you up a bit'. Another person said that they use comedy films to escape from the real world because they never fail to entertain (this shows that the genre of comedy does actually have a big impact on a number a different people with different backstories).

Where are you most likely to see a film trailer?

The development of technology over the years has been dramatic and so has the way people consume medias (and films in this case). 90% (yes nine, zero) said that they are more likely to see a trailer on their mobile phones. The reason for this is potentially because of the fact that studies show that an average person is on their phone hours at a time a day maybe on Youtube, scrolling through social media etc. Leading on to this, it is the perfect opportunity for companies to promote their films because the use of social media means that there is a constant cycle of sharing, if a trailer was to be published on a social media website, the audiences would promote the films themselves instead of the film companies having to do it. (hence the 90% being more likely to see it on their phones).

This is heavily backed up by question 7 on the survey which asks whether the audience see trailers on their social media timelines. 90% said yes and 10% said they don't have social media.

How important are the quality of sound and camera work within a trailer/movie to you

100% of people said that camera work and sound were 'SUPER IMPORTANT'. This suggests that when constructing my trailer I need to make sure that the camera work and sound are to a highest quality. I will do this by adding in a range of complex shots and movements and make sure to dramatize the scenes even more using those shots.

For sound i will include a lot of non-diagetic ambient sounds to try and create the set of the scenes audibly. By doing this it can place the audience into feeling a certain mood while watching it so then when a sudden change happens it can shock them, keeping them on edge

What do you look for in a trailer?

100% of those surveyed said that they look for the quality of production. The quality of production seems to be the biggest factor in appealing to the wide audience. So the first main priority will be making the trailer look as cinematic as possible, eg filming in 24 frames per second or following the codes and conventions of a film trailer etc.

However those that selected the quality of production also selected between the trailer introducing the story line and the effects and scenery. I am interested in exploring more with the green screens to try and add effects to to the trailer to make it that extra bit noticeable and unique to all the other students. It will also help me to broaden my locations to help explain the stroyline easier.

Others also selected the introduction to the story line as being something they look for in a trailer. This was my original idea of what i was going to try a keep consistent. I need to be able to keep the audience on track with the story line throughout and i intent to do this by maybe exaggerating important items, scenes, dialogue etc. By doing this the audience will be more likely to notice the story line within all the quick shots and action in the trailer.
