Even though the 13th amendment abolished slavery legally, a new form of slavery called sharecropping, took place in the South, in which planters lended out land to minorities, for a percentage of the crop cultivated. Also contracts were formed between the planters and workers, and if any workers tried to run off before the end of their contract, than they could get in trouble with the law(like runaways during official slavery). Not to mention, that many former slaves returned to plantation labor, just now with citizenship, and a new title other than slave or property. Another issue that occured even though this amendment passed, was black codes which became utilized in the South, and prevented many of the former slaves from using their new freedoms, and acted like legal chains around their limbs instead of the metal ones they wore before the amendment, and the Civil War.

Although the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments lost their potency soon after their passing, by decisions such as the Slaughterhouse Cases, they proved to be revolutionary in the next century by providing the foundation for social fairness, encouraging the equal treatment of other minorities, and established permanent legal standards for the proper treatment of other races.

The 13th amendment, which was used to abolish slavery, was pretty much negated and danced around by various acts such as Black Codes, which restricted blacks from following the various ideas that were fought for during the Civil War. With the Black Codes, ideas such as sharecropping, forced labour, and The Peonage System arose to keep blacks in line and basically do slavery without it technically being slavery.
