This allows readers to gain more information on characters, which helps them understand the story better. So, after Hester's sin, she was no longer able to be seen in the light. She was trapped in the darkness. The story constantly refers to Hester being trapped in the darkness, especially in her home.(Hawthorne, ch. 13) On the other hand, Hester's daughter, Pearl, is always seen in the sun. It's almost as if the sun is attracted to her. Pearl even would want to play with the sunshine sometimes, and acted like she and the sunlight had some sort of bond.(Hawthorne, ch. 7) Pearl being attracted to the sun, or the light, shows that she is pure and has done no sins. This quote is another one that shows that due to Hester's sin and guiltiness, she does not get sun or light beamed on her, it in fact stays away from her.
"All at once, as with a sudden smile of heaven, forth burst the sunshine." (Hawthorne, ch. 18)
The sunshine, or light, finally beamed on Hester after she removed the letter "A" from her chest. This article was written by Pope John Paul II about Mother Teresa. She was a saint, and was looked upon as being very pure and innocent. Throughout the article, the pope refers to Mother Teresa as a "ray of light" several times. The pope did this to show her pureness, because light does represent this. Like Pearl, she was always shined upon and related to light due to her never sinning or being guilty of anything.
