6th Year Geography Field Trip

Our 6th Year Geography Class recently went to Kippure Estate, Blessington, Co Wicklow to carry out their field study which is worth 20% of their overall Leaving Certificate Geography Exam result. The students carried out various activities which included measuring the speed, depth and width of the river, as well as angles of the river and its banks along with examining rocks present. A great day was had by all and the students demonstrated great team work and enthusiasm. 5th Year Workshop on Latin America

Ms Rappoccio’s 5th year Spanish class was involved in a two-day workshop on Latin America. The workshop was delivered by Thomas McDonagh from the Latin America Solidarity Centre (LASC) in Ireland. Students actively took part in a discussion table and walking debate on human rights in South America, focusing on the Colombian area and the use of coal from Ireland. Students had the opportunity to both speak in Spanish and English and they become aware of how the Colombian community have been negatively affected by the exportation of coal in our country. An excellent experience!

Tyndall College Carlow Chess Our chess club runs on a Tuesday and Thursday at lunch time. All are welcome from people who haven’t a clue how to play to those who already do. We teach the skills and also run a tournament for those who are already able to play. Jorge Ramierez was the Tyndall College Chess Tournament Champion for 2021/2022. Jake Ayers was second. Partnering with the Music Department, JCSP provided funding for the Let’s Drum workshop from The Mobile Music School, which through games, activities and performing workshops allowed first year students of performing arts to explore the percussion family, develop their understanding of the beat and improve their rhythmical ability, whilst performing as part of a drumming ensemble.

Over 80 students welcomed the Celebrity Chef, Billy Costello to Tyndall College, and were treated to a professional cookery demonstration. Involving two starters, 2 main courses and a dessert, the students benefited from seeing the reality of a working kitchen and a delicious tasting session of the dishes made on the day. The Home Economics were delighted to facilitate this JCSP event.

They played a very intense game today vs Coláiste Bríde Carnew. Our girls fought tooth and nail for every ball. All their hard work throughout the year has paid off. Final score of 23 – 20. Captained by Hellen the girls will face Dominican College in the Final next Thursday 5th of May.

Some of our TYs got the opportunity to participate in wheelchair basketball today during PE. We are so grateful that Joanne Wall from the Irish Wheelchair Association-Sport was with us to teach the students all about the sport. Conor Murphy currently plays with South East Swifts wheelchair basketball team and Cathal Fitzpatrick was a former player with them and hopes to return to play next week! This year we were chosen as overall joint winners of the Community Engagement Award with WorldWise Global schools for our Global Goals Project. 500 schools in Ireland participate with WWGS. Huge congratulations to all.

Bio Diversity Garden & Green Schools

Work has begun on our Biodiversity garden where we created bird feeders using recyclable materials. These are hung on the fence- huge thanks to Mr Walsh and his students in the Woodwork Department for his hard work and patience. We have planted wildflower seeds, and bee friendly plants and shrubs to attract birds, bees and butterflies to our garden. Students also created a Bug Hotel and is a work in progress.

This year we also decided to organise a fundraiser to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, while raising much needed funds for Amnesty International Ireland. We were inundated with fabulous baked goods and treats. This was an incredible whole school community effort with people going to great lengths to decorate and ice their goods in the Ukranian colours. We managed to raise over €1220!! Heartfelt thanks to each and every person who contributed so generously to this fundraiser.

At Tyndall College we are continuously trying to raise awareness about the SDGs wherever we can! We display the goals prominently throughout the school and every classroom has an SDG poster. During our GCE displays we try to incorporate the Global Goals icons on our displays in order for everyone to make connections to each goal.

This year we decided to create awareness of the goals in our local community. TY students came up with slogans for each goal and we decided we would like to display them on the inroads around Carlow town. These goals will move every two weeks to create a conversation among all Carlovians and visitors to Carlow.

TY students raised awareness of Carlow Mental Health Association’s campaign Hello Carlow How are You? This was a very successful campaign whereby students said Hello in every students national language to create a video campaign. They also organised a display stand in the GP area to create awareness of the many services that are available with Carlow Mental Health Association. Our 6^th Year Geography students went to Kippure, Co Wicklow to complete their river study focusing on river transportation and deposition. Despite the rain and cold, the students carried out each experiment with enthusiasm and attention to detail working collaboratively. This year for Maths week, students were invited to show how they use maths in every life. They were given the choice of creating either a poster, video or podcast to capture how they use maths in their life.

Kilkenny Carlow ATHE Bake Off

Our in house Carlow Kilkenny ATHE Bake off is taking place in school 10th December, where students are invited to bring in homemade baked and decorated cupcakes (junior competition) and a decorated sponge cake (senior students). The winners of the in house competition will be put forward to represent our school at the ATHE Carlow Kilkenny Bake Off, taking place in Presentation De La Salle Bagnelstown, on Thursday 15th January

Young SVP Christmas Food Appeal

The Young SVP group in TY are appealing to staff and students to donate non-perishable items to their Christmas food appeal, which will be given to Carlow Lions, SVP and St. Claires. Posters have been displayed in classrooms and around the school.

Huge Success at Tyndall College Careers Fair

Tyndall College hosted more than 50 local and national exhibitors in their Careers Fair on the 18th of November. The exhibitors came from a variety of different pathways and showed students that various routes they can take in the future after thy finish post-primary education. 14 post primary schools across Leinster visited the exhibition.

Rubbish Festival Workshop in Partnership with Carlow County Council

TY students took part in a 2 day video making workshop with the Rubbish festival, in association with Carlow County Council. They were challenged to highlight an environmental issue, and creatively produced their very own one minute video to raise awareness.
