Homework should take no more than 15–20 minutes per night. If a student takes longer or it makes them feel frustrated, the assignment can be marked with a star and write a short note about what was confusing. I will always check in with students who had trouble and go over the assignment together the next day.

Homework is most helpful for students and their learning when it reinforces what they have already learned, not when it adds pressure or becomes a struggle for them. Homework should be meaningful, not just busy work, and it should not require help from an adult or be a source of stress. This policy is built around helping students feel successful, motivated, and confident in their learning.

Homework is beneficial when students can complete it independently. It should be a challenge, but not challenging enough where they are unable to complete any of it without help from someone. Welcome! As your child’s 1st grade team, we believe homework should support early learning in a positive, low stress way. After reviewing current research, we’ve created a homework policy that keeps your child’s development, well being, and learning success at the center.

• Purposeful Practice: Homework will only be assigned to reinforce what we have already practiced in class.

• Independent Work: All assignments are made for 1st graders to complete on their own, with little to no parent help needed.

• Limited Time: Homework will take no more than 10 to 15 minutes per night not including reading.

• Reading Every Night: Children should spend time reading or being read to every evening. This builds vocabulary, fluency, and a love for books!

• Not Graded: Homework will not be graded. It’s for skill-building and routine, not performance.

Why This Policy?

We want to start off by saying how grateful we are to have your student in our classroom. We look forward to having an amazing school year! This letter is in regard to our homework policy. We believe homework should be a supportive tool for learning rather than a source of stress for your child. Students will be given homework, a maximum of 4 times a week, which will last no longer than 30 minutes each, with no homework on the weekends. Each Monday, we will begin the day with a brief recap of the previous week's homework. At the bottom of each homework assignment will be a scale from 1 to 5 on the stress/difficulty they felt while completing it. This will be a great indication for us as teachers to see if we need to adjust or recap on the lesson. We want to emphasize that homework is not graded but rather based on completion. If a student does not complete their homework, they will not receive a punishment. However, if a student does complete their homework, they will receive a sticker on their homework sheet, and we will tally individually in our teacher notebook. 10 tallies will earn a prize from our class prize box. If a student repeatedly misses their homework, we will schedule a check-in meeting to address the issue. We are open to any thoughts and suggestions you may have regarding this policy. Based on the article "Homework: What the Research Says,” our rationale is that homework should be used as a tool for students to learn, but too much of it can cause unnecessary stress, which would lead to diminished academic performance and a further dislike for school.
