In March 1969 during the Vietnam War President Richard Nixon authorized secret bombing raids in Cambodia. Nixon believed North Vietnam was transporting troops and supplies through neighboring Cambodia into South Vietnam. So on March 18, 1969 Nixon started the bombings that lasted all the way until April 1970. People predict that there were around 100 000 deaths with an addition of two million people becoming homesless. All this information was kept secret from the American public because Cambodia was seemingly neutral. Then on April 28, 1970 America invaded Cambodia and convinced people to try and overthrow the government

Following the invasion from the U.S.A., the Khmer Rouge was formed when the US told people from Cambodia they should try and overthrow their government. Khmer Rouge was a communist political party that would take power in the year 1975. With Khmer Rouge taking power, they installed a man by the name of Pol Pot as the leader of the country. Pol Pot wanted to create an agrarian(a society who's economy is based on producing and maintaing farmland) socialist society that he believed would evolve into a communist society. The government forcefully moved the urban population to the countryside to work on farms.

Following Pol Pot coming into power, people would be send to the country side where they would be forced to work as farmers, digging canals and tending to crops. Gross mismanagement of the country’s economy led to shortages of food and medicine, and untold numbers of people succumbed to disease and starvation. The Khmer Rouge created labor brigades, assigning groups depending on age and gender. This policy resulted in hundreds of thousands of Cambodians starving to death.

Religious and ethnic minorities faced persecution. Christian and Buddhist groups were targeted for repression but it was the Cham Muslim group that was most affected by the genocide. As many as 500,000 people, or 70% of the total Cham population, were wiped out because the Khmer Rouge placed a heavy emphasis on the rural peasant population. Anyone considered an intellectual was targeted for special treatment. This meant teachers, lawyers, doctors, and clergy were the targets of the regime. Even people wearing glasses were the target of Pol Pot’s reign of terror.

A wave of bloody purges spreads throghout Cambodia, directed by Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge which attempts to eliminate all dissident communists and other moderates and people who fight against the government. The purges spread to the mass of the peasantry as well as to the persecuted urban evacuees. Cambodia also launches military attacks across all three of its borders, massacring civilians in Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. Later Cambodia declines to negotiate with Vietnam over the border war. Massive purges spark an uprising in eastern zones of Cambodia in opposition to the Pol Pot regime. Rebels are defeated and regroup across the Vietnamese border and call for help from Hanoi(capital of Vietnam)

This massacre ended on January 7th, 1979 when the Vietnamese military invaded Cambodia and toppled the Khmer Rouge regime. Some higher up people in the party had retreated to the remote areas of the country, where they tried to remain active but gradually became less and less powerful. Although the Khmer Rouge finally came to an end, after the years of them ruling there were approxamitly 1.5-3 million people had died due to the Khmer Rouge policies.
