When I started 8 years ago, Jill started pulling me slowly over to literacy (I was FIRMLY in the higher education space). But now, I lead literacy projects at AIR and am an "expert" in literacy.

Economists, even those who work in education or labor contexts, don't tend to value literacy in their work. We figure we got where we are by being good at math, so math must be the best measure of intelligence. You can usually tell this from our writing.

But before I was an economist, I was a kid who grew up in the library reading everything I could get my hands on, just to see what I could learn each day. Finding this group of people who thought deeply about literacy - how to develop it, how to measure it, and why it matters - felt like home. I've learned so much from all of your expertise, and can't wait to learn more about literacy from, and with, all of you! -Daniel Hubbard
