I think that if it is outlined in the policy clearly, it is not her decision. She would have to tell the parent that they will not be able to serve the cake. If she is allowed to make the suggestion of perhaps telling the mom that she could try inviting people to share it with her child maybe at another location I think I would do that. I do my best to commend her wanting to participate but I would also be firm on the fact that we cannot serve the cake. I would ask if she still wanted to bring something that she bring something along the lines of the philosophy of the center such as a fruit tray or the veggie pizza mentioned before. I would apologize to her but stand my ground on the fact that the cake would not be served at the center.

We know that you wanted to celebrate an important day with your child and its friends and appreciate the effort you are making, but unfortunately the policies of the center don’t allow us to serve children food containing high amount of sugar. For that we can serve the cake, but if you still want to bring something to celebrate your child’s birthday you can bring fruits, vegetables, or veggie pizza. We love to have families come and spend time with their children.

It would not be fair to the other children or parents who have followed the policy to allow the cake to be served. So I would try my best to explain to the mother, using a translator if possible the policy and how we could celebrate it within policy.

About 13 years ago, when my daughter was in preschool, I had a similar experience with this scenario. I was excited to bring home-made cupcakes and balloons for her class birthday party. However, the program director would not let me bring them to the class because of the center’s policies. She told me that I could not bring the balloons because of safety issues. As I am currently studying in ECCE at GTC, I understand how important center policies are because they keep the center under control. I think she needs to keep center policy, but explain well to the mother why.

I think that is a responsibility dilemma. I would explain to her that the school Policies strongly encourages families to celebrate special events with healthy foods such as berries, watermelon, sliced fruit, vegetable plates, and veggie pizza. My ethical responsibility is to welcome all parents and encourage them to participate in the program, and I would let her know that if she want to share her decision on bringing cake to the class for her child birthday she need to have a conversation about that with the director. I understand how you feel, but I need to follow the school policies. Ask her if she has any questions regarding the school policy please let us know so that we could explain it to her.

If I was Olivia, I would explain to the parent the center's policy, and tell her that cakes are not allowed because it is unhealthy for the children. However, since the parent is a new member and this is their first time contributing, I would allow the parent to celebrate their kid's birthday at the center with a cake this time only. Next time if the parent brings another cake to the center then she will have to take it home and will not be able to share it with the children.
