Franklin D. Roosevelt was the newly elected president in the election of 1932, easily taking the victory over the prior president trying to become re-elected, Herbert Hoover, who had a popular vote of 39.7% compared to Roosevelt's 57.4%. (Yes, Franklin is related to Theodore, they are distant cousins.) Prior to him winning the election, FDR was a governor of New York who paused his position with polio, but easily came back and eventually became president of the United States.

What Was Wrong With Hoover?

Herbert Hoover was the president prior to FDR, and he was also the president during the Great Depression. The reason that he was so unpopular toward the middle to the end of his presidency is because of his stubbornness in not trying to make big changes in America, and all of his small tariffs and acts that failed miserably, such as the Agricultural Marketing Act. Even when Roosevelt was elected, Hoover tried to convince Roosevelt to not make drastic changes to the American banks and economy, but obviously FDR refused.

Why Was This Election So Important?

The election of 1932 proved to be the end of the Republican dominance and was a new light or "New Era," as he called it. This election was needed to prove that America could emerge from the Great Depression and continue to be the great country that it could be. Hoover was not doing his job to keep America out of the Great Depression, so FDR had to step in and fix things that Hoover could not.

The Turning Point

The question is why is it such a turning point for America, and the clear answer is the emergence from the Great Depression with a newly elected president. America was in a crisis, and they needed something fast to get them out of it. FDR proved to be the man for the job and if he was not elected in that 1932 election, then the United States could have stayed in that depression and kept going down hill until the country under the rule of Hoover would have nothing left.
