Mesopotamia was made up of different regions, and also the word Mesopotamia means "land between the rivers", while it has the Tigris and Euphrates river. The Euphrates flows through most of Syria, but both Euphrates and Tigris move through Modern Iraq. The rivers were important to Mesopotamia because they were the key to good farming, travel, and trade. When the rivers flooded, the Mesopotamian people were able to create dams and waterways. This taught them to irrigate their crops so they would have food every year.

Organized Government

As rivers brought trade, more people came to Mesopotamia and developed cities. The people then formed laws and they assembled armies. This became the start of an organized government. Priests and priestesses were powerful and controlled much of the land. Kings ran the government, and led armies and organized building projects. If the king died then his son would have to take his place.
Challenge: One benefit of having a king is that the people knew they would always have a leader. One bad thing about having a king is that people don't have a choice in their leader.

People in Mesopotamia were very serious on religion. They believed in many gods. They built a grand temple which was called a ziggurat. Ziggurat means "mountain of god" or "hill of heaven". The top of a ziggurat is considered a holy place. Each god was thought to have power over a natural force or a human activity-flooding, for example, or basket weaving.
Challenge: The Sumerians believed in many gods, but Catholics believe in only one God.
