Summary of your allocated framework (Smoking, Vaping, Alcohol and Other Drugs.)

The Healthy Schools Achievement Program is centred around seven key health ideas where Smoking, Vaping, Alcohol and Other Drugs will be the centre of focus. As part of a whole-service approach to health and wellness, this health sector promotes drug-free, smoke-free and vape-free as well as low-risk alcohol consumption, particularly for young teens. Teenagers who regularly drink alcohol are already at danger of developing health problems in the future. Several health risks come from drinking from a young age, especially since their bodies are still growing. Teaching teenagers how to safely drink, learn how much a standard drink is and even other alternatives to alcohol can reduce the risks of issues and alcoholism in early ages. We chose this topic because from personal experience we recognise a lot of underage teenagers are encourage to take alcohol by peers, family members, internet social media and we want to raise the awareness about the harm of alcohol to teenagers

Your reflection - How did your primary or secondary school address this area? Do you have positive or challenging memories of these learning experiences? Was the learning sustainable beyond school?

Sophie- Alcohol nor substance abuse was ever brought up to me throughout my primary education, however when I started high school the topic of alcohol consumption was regularly spoken about in health classes. Unfortunately, as opposed to learning about BOTH physical and mental health risks (up until about year 11-12), we only ever discussed how alcohol consumption in our youth could affect our physical health, which therefore never really warned us of the mental strains by which substance abuse could really affect the growing minds of teenagers. I personally learnt the most through my own physical experience with alcohol and the challenges that came along with it, I grew up in a small town and therefore, if you weren't drinking by the age of 14, you ‘weren’t cool’ or you were ‘immature’, therefore pressuring lots of young growing adolescents to indulge in something that they knew so little about.

Jiya - The topic of alcohol abuse and responsible drinking was never really brought up in high school for me. There were occasional mentions and warning during year level assemblies but nothing more. Everyone I knew, including friends, started drinking around 13-14 years old. Mainly just learnt what I needed to know on my own. There used to be times when I was younger where i’d have a drink just because a few of my friends were and I used to hate the taste of it. Not the case anymore. Majority of my knowledge of responsible drinking and learning about the health risks came from the internet, reading other people’s experiences that they have shared and learning what to do and what not to do from that.

Manyun – From my memories, the issue of alcohol was rarely brought up, whether is from family, friends and schoolteachers in early years, especially with family and friends we almost never really have any serious conversations about drinking alcohol beside not to drive after taking alcohols and being beware with the places and surrounding if we drink outside our home. Me and my siblings were encouraged to try alcohol by our parents when we are together eating or when they are having a drink, it was quite an experience although the taste was not very pleasant to us. The knowledge of alcohol was brought to me was when I was in my senior year, since we were reaching our legal drinking age the education of alcohol and other substances become very important to school and that is when we properly learn about responsible drinking.

From the discussion of your schooling experiences list; One thing you would continue, One thing you would adapt/change and one thing you would drop + a short reason

Jiya –

Continue: keep bringing attention to the topic of responsible drinking in schools so students remain aware of these risks to an extent.

Change: for older teens, ensure they are educated on the risks, what to do/not do. The health risks that come with drinking are usually overlooked when it comes to younger people since they are simply ‘too young’.

Drop: being ignorant to these issues just because they’re teens and ‘it's bound to happen’. This topic should always be discussed not just with teens but also with parents and guardians to ensure they are educated with the risks that could potentially harm their children.

Soph-

Continue: One thing that I would continue is introducing young teens to the health risks of early and heavy drinking, both long term and short term.

Change: One thing that I would like to change is the age by which teenagers are introduced to the mental side of the risks that alcohol abuse can bring along, especially regarding young developing minds.

Drop: One thing I would like to drop is the negative stigma revolving around speaking up about mental health side of the of alcohol and substance abuse, no alcohol is not a good way to deal with your feelings, however instead of shaming those who have gone through substance abuse, we should be providing alternative solutions.

Manyun -

Continue: I would keep the way how my teachers introduce us about the physical effects that alcohol beings, the goggles that makes your visions go crazy and the small challenges while having them on.

Change: One thing to change is to raise more awareness of alcohol intake and education to younger students not just those who are reaching the age.

Drop: I would drop the influence of how a lot of teen think drinking alcohol is a cool thing to do, same thing as smoking and vaping. I was one of the teens, I even though about smoking. The environment and the influence from peers did deeply influence me to try “cool things”.

As of currently, the global teenage alcohol consumption rates vary incredibly widely, as in some places the rates are declining, whereas in others it is increasing, unfortunately because of this the general rates of teenage alcohol consumption are very average as in some countries the average is lower than in others. Although it is very different all over the place, it is still rapidly changing and therefore students in all countries should be taught the same standard criteria alongside the criteria that suits their countries expectations. Globally, the rate of teenage alcohol consumption is only 19%, however as it varies from each country, it is not a great indicator of progress as some countries, like Australia, have a decently high rate of teenage alcohol consumption. An achievable focus would be finding the patterns between each countries spikes and decreases in teenage consumption of alcohol.

Shows that there has been a significant drop in alcohol consumption with people aged 14-17. Though the percentage of women drinking alcohol since 2016 to around 2022-2023 has slowly been rising. (29% to 35% increase)

In 2022-2023, the AIHW (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare) conducted a survey called the National Drug Strategy Household Survey that targeted people aged 14 and over. When asked if they knew that Australia has guidelines that tell people how to drink less alcohol and remain healthy, 51% of people aged 14–17 was the least likely to say they did.

In Victoria, between 2019 and 2025, there has been a slight increase in teenage alcohol consumption, which is obvious as there was a decrease from 2001-2019. In the past year, approximately 31% of Victorian teenagers, aged 14-17 admitted to the consumption of alcohol in the past year. Alongside this overall data on teenagers in general, it can be noted that there is actually a gender difference in the consumption of alcohol during adolescence, showing that Females actually have an average 35% as opposed to males who only have an average 27%, although it is still significant on both sides, it may be something to tough on in the classroom. An achievable focus would be allowing for the students to share personal view on these numbers.
