Question 1: What were the underlying reasons for the 2017 curriculum revision as stated by the MoNE?

There are many underlying reasons for the 2017 curriculum revision. Initially, it is not possible to ignore the developing world and its socio-cultural, scientific, technological, etc. effects. It is possible to benefit from the effects of the developing world in order to keep our future prosperous through education. In order for the generation we raise to be qualified, some qualities that should be acquired are also a reason that should not be forgotten. In this case, it can be said that how it is gained and created awareness, that is, what ways are used and what information is presented is an important reason. Another reason is that background experiences can be used in other stages and areas of life. The changing needs of the individual and society can also be seen as one of the reasons that cause the curriculum to change. In addition to these, development plans, action plans of governments, results of international exams, scientific researches and reports of national and international institutions and organizations are also among the underlying reasons. In the following video the definition of curriculum, needs and importance of curriculum revision is explained. If you want, you can start to watch from 2.55 onwards.

In the National curriculum, it is not clearly stated which educational philosophy is based on although the importance and necessity of the educational philosophy are mentioned in detail in the renewed curricula. Sense of wonder, creative thinking, social and intellectual skills are the mentioned features of the educational philosophy. Constructivism is the underlying educational philosophy in 2005. Individual-oriented learning is the key word in that year. It can be interpreted as follows that the fact that the structure of the renewed curriculum is generally similar to the programs updated in 2005 suggests that there is a similarity in the educational philosophy adopted. In the following article or text, the underlying educational philosophy is conveyed.

Values Education is the core element that was introduced as the main focus of all teaching programs in NC. Values education should be integrated into the materials and activities offered to students. It is essential to make students adopt national and moral values such as justice, friendship, patriotism and benevolence. 21st century skills, divided into cognitive, social and personal strands, should be offered to students in addition to values education as a core element. In the following video, values are illustrated thanks to a story. Teachers can benefit for their students.

Acquiring 21st century skills such as critical and creative thinking, research and problem solving ability, entrepreneurship and communication, empathy, leadership, and self-control is still seen as an ongoing need. These competences are not seen as adequately acquired. Values education should not be separated and limited from the curriculum. As another criticism, no information was given about the criteria to which these values will be applied to which class. Another key criticism is that since some values can be interpreted differently by different teachers, disruptions such as incomplete learning may occur.

It is a deficiency that it does not include any information about how the specified skills will be integrated into the lessons. Providing just what these skills are and brief explanations about them is not enough for their proper application. In addition, they were not found to be equivalent to these qualifications in the acquisitions of all courses. Therefore, when it comes to the application of these skills, it becomes uncertain how they will be acquired by the student. Another problem that should not be ignored on the basis of the TYÇ is how these skills will be evaluated. For this reason, the failure of teachers to reach a concrete result can be considered as a negative criticism. As a positive criticism, it can be said that it will be useful to present sample applications and explanations.

With the new curriculum revision, an important step was taken in English teaching. This is a foreign language based education decision. Lesson hours have been increased. For example, in 2018-2019, it was stated that foreign language lessons could be given up to 18 hours on request. Another important step is foreign language-based education in 5th graders. Besides, another significant step is to reduce the number of units from 40 to 36 in 2018-2019. In addition to these, other important steps are supporting materials and giving teachers the opportunity to choose, expressing the lack of listening and speaking skills in the materials and seeking solutions, and choosing words, phrases and word groups for daily use.

a) What you have learnt through this task (please be specific, name clearly those points you learnt. Also make comments. What did you find rational? What points are you critical of?)
✅I have learnt some effective underlying reasons. These are development plans, action plans of governments, results of international exams, scientific researches and reports of national and international institutions and organizations. I realized the significance of them. Internationalism is a key point and I found it rational because the relationship between countries is important. Besides, I realized the significance of values education. In addition to raising talented and knowledgeable individuals, I found it rational to base on revealing the good character. However, as a criticism, examples or detailed research could be presented to teachers on how to integrate them into the lesson. In summary, it is a nice detail that the change is based on many reasons and these are remarkable underpinnings. It is incredibly valuable for me to attach such importance to values education. Because training a good teacher or doctor is far better than using that knowledge to mislead society or to use it to produce biological weapons to kill living things.

b) What you would like to learn more about?

✅Firstly, I would like to learn more about the question 8. Besides, I would like to learn about the integrating the values into my English lesson in the future. In addition to these, educational philosophy and the features of it is an unclear point. So, I would like to know more about this.

c) What you have not truly understood so you need to read more

✅In fact, I could not understand the question 8. I did not find enough sources for my better understanding. Furthermore, all nine key competences are not appropriate for each lesson. So, I could not understand how these are integrated into all courses. For English, I can find authentic materials such as videos, texts, etc in an exact unit. I need more sources about these two subjects.
