Sebastian and Antonio make fun of him and are happy when he figures out that Ferdinand and Miranda will be King and Queen.

He is the highest status of Nobles and is upset that his son might have died.

Description: Ferdinand is the only son of Alonso. He swims to the island when his ship wrecked and thinks his father drowned. He falls in love with Miranda too quickly so Prospero makes him do work so that he can be with Miranda. He respects Prospero once he finds out who he is because he heard good things about Prospero.

Description: Stephano is a drunkard and is friends with Caliban. He found Triculo and Caliban taking shelter and had them drink wine with him. Stephano wants to kill Prospero to rule the island and become Cailban's new master. He washed up on shore holding onto a barrel of wine and he enjoys the entertainment that Caliban is.

Description: Daughter of Prospero. She does not know anything about the world except what Prospero has taught her. She is 15 years old and has never seen any other men besides her father and Caliban.

Power & Knowledge( Act 1)

No matter what status a person is in, power is brought on by knowledge. A situation that shows this is when the Nobles on the ship thought that they had power when the tempest came, but the Boatsmen had the real power because they knew how to work the ship. One of the Boatsmen spoke with the others about "[Taking] in the topsail. Tend to th’ Master’s whistle.—Blow till thou burst thy wind, if room enough"(Shakespeare 1.1. 6-8). This shows how the main Boatman knew what parts of the ship needed to be fixed in the tempest with the right vocabulary compared to the Nobles in the scene. They were just complaining about the Boatsmen's work rather than appreciating them for their knowledge and being a leader.

Perspective(Act 1)

A person may have different perspectives based on their experiences and how they live. In Act 1 the person with the least amount of perspective would probably be Miranda because she lived on a magical island her whole life and only saw 2 people ever. When Ferdinand appeared she thought that she "might call him A thing divine, for nothing natural I ever saw so noble"(Shakespeare 1.2. 498-500). This shows her lack of knowledge about men, this could also infer other things that she has a lack of knowledge in, like boats, ariel, and other laws. This is due to her father being the only person teaching her about things, which could show a bias in her knowledge.

Theme for Act 2 (Perspective)

Having a different perspective can change how powerful a person can feel. Caliban was a slave to Prospero so when he got the chance to potentially have a different life he wanted to have more power than what he had so far. When Stephano takes advantage of Caliban, convincing Caliban that he is a god, Caliban wants to "kiss thy foot. I’ll swear myself thy subject" (Shakespeare 2.2.158). Caliban's expression shows how he knew that Stephano was better than Prospero because he allowed him to speak freely and had a God-like drink that he would allow him to have. This gave Caliban more power than he had with Prospero so he took advantage of that opportunity.

Theme for Act 3 (Perspective)

Perspective deciphers a person's influence on others or from others. Gonzalo takes food from the table, he is hungry, but he does not get attacked by the Harpy because he is positive and helps Prospero get off of Milan with the right resources. This shows how his actions and perspective are respected since he is so positive. Ariel spares him because of this. Ariel tells Alonso, Sebastian, and Adrian that they "are three men of sin, whom Destiny, That hath to instrument this lower world"(Shakespeare 3.3.70-71). Alonso, Sebastian, and Adrian get attacked by the Harpy because they are bad people and are power-hungry. Ariel or Harpy tells him that they are sinners and need to be punished for how they acted towards Prospero and Gonzalo.

Power

Caliban wants to beat up Trinculo because he does not have the information that there is another way to handle a conflict. Caliban wants to kill Prospero with a fork and knife and take away his books. Caliban wants to take away his books because it would be taking away his knowledge which gives him his power. Prospero has magic in his books.

Act 4

Prospero stops the celebration of Ferdinand and Miranda's marriage after he remembers that Caliban is trying to kill him.
Prospero is angry and vengeful he acts on these emotions.

Two things that distracted them were the clothes and the dogs. The clothes related to power because the clothes made them feel that they had power when they had nothing. They started saying King Stephano because of the fancy new clothes(Scene 1 , Act 4 ).

Act 5

In the first lines through Act 1 scene 1, Prospero begins to change. Ariel is a better person and he influences Prospero by influencing him to not act on his anger.

"Yet with my nobler reason ’gainst my fury Do I take part. The rarer action is In virtue than in vengeance"(1.5. 34-36). It is better to act in virtue even though it is easier to be vengeance. He will give magic away and forgive solemnly so that he causes no more harm to other people.

"Holy Gonzalo, honorable man, Mine eyes, e’en sociable to the show of thine, Fall fellowly drops."(1.5.71-73). Prospero says to gonzalo.
Prospero frees Ariel from his slave bound to him.
Alonso apologized to Miranda because he kicked her out of the island. Prospero says not to apologize because they are forgiven now and do not need to be in that dark place anymore.
Caliban gets perspective when he learns that Stephano is just a drunkard when Alonso and Prospero tell him about it. Now Caliban is sorry for what he did but does not want to face the consequences.
