This is from the point of view of Anna's mom. I think it really shows what the story is all about. This is what Anna is trying to defend. This explains how Anna is feeling throughout the book. I never thought much of this, but looking back, Anna did lose herself. In fact, she died. If she hadn't died, her sister would have, and now that Anna died, her sister was able to live. This has a lot of foreshadowing in it. The last sentence, "Not if you’re the one who started the fire, not if you’re a passerby to a car wreck, not if you’re a perfectly matched donor,” can tell you a lot about what happens in the book. Jesse, the brother, starts fires to deal with what is going on in his life. He starts fires because he feels he can control them when he truly cant control the things him and his family are facing. When it mentions a care accident, this foreshadows what happens to Anna in the end.
