THE LIFE OF JOHN BOSCO

John Bosco, born 16th of August 1815 was born in the small town of Becchi, Italy. His birth followed the tragic Napoleonic Wars which brought drought and famine to his hometown. At two, Bosco's father died, leaving his mother and two older brothers to raise him. The Bosco family were farmhands; growing food and raising sheep for the Moglian Family. Despite living in poverty, he and his family supplied food, shelter and clothing to the homeless. His mother, Margherita, raised her three boys to be very religious, shaping John's faith and devout through attending Church and participation in prayer.

At nine, Bosco had the first of several vivid dreams that played an influential role on his outlook and work. In this dream, Bosco encountered several poor boys who swore and blasphemed as they played, and among these boys, a grandly dressed man and woman observed. The man said to Bosco; "You will have to win these friends of yours not with blows, but with gentleness and kindness. So begin right now to show them that sin is ugly and virtue beautiful." This would later guide his work in educating street children. After witnessing a travelling circus troupe perform, Bosco was inspired to learn magic tricks to hold people's attention. He began studying several illusions and performing shows displaying his skills in juggling, acrobatics and magic tricks, with prayers before and after each performance. It was this interest in performing prayer in front of an audience that prompted John Bosco to study priesthood.

Living in poverty, Bosco was prevented from receiving an education which was required to become a priest. However, a parish priest was willing to provide him with an education. Antonio, John's older brother didn't approve of this ambition to study, which became a key reason to why Bosco left home at just 12 to work as a hired farm labourer. In 1830, Bosco came across Joseph Cafasso, a priest who was willing to help Bosco with his studies. Eleven years later, John was ordained a priest and began work on his first assignment in Turin. Whilst in Turin, Bosco was appalled by the living conditions of prisons, which accustomed many children from 12-18. Determined to prevent others from ending up there, Bosco went into the slums of industrialised Turin and helped the homeless and poor. He met boys where they played and gathered and used his talents as a magician to hold their attention. He preached the importance of education and religious values to these street children. Bosco sheltered several homeless boys throughout his lifetime and by the 1860s, John and his mother, Margherita had taken in 800 lodgings. Bosco continued his mission; establishing new rights for boys who worked as apprentices and the society of St Francis de Sales. Bosco died of January 31st 1888 and was canonised in 1834.

Matthew 7:24-27

The Parables of the Wise and Foolish Builders
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

THE WORLD OF THE TEXT
The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders appears in Mathew 7:24-27 and Luke 6:46-49 and emphasises the importance of applying Jesus' teachings and practices to one's life. This is illustrated through the comparison of a wise builder and foolish one. The wise man builds his house on rock which protects it from winds and rain, but the foolish man who built his house on sand, is not protected and his house therefor falls down. The main purpose of this parable is to inform readers that they must put Jesus' teachings into action in order to be protected from the trials of life.

THE WORLD BEHIND THE TEXT
This parable is not specific on the place and time it is set as the parable is always relevant. There will always be wise and foolish people who either act out Jesus' teachings or choose not too. Similarly, there will always be hardships like the rain and winds described, thus always being a need to be sheltered from them. The characters are also not entirely specific; not given a name or characteristics apart from being 'wise' and 'foolish'. We can find the characters in ourselves, and we are the ones who decide whether our actions will be wise ones, or foolish ones.

THE WORLD IN FRONT OF THE TEXT
The teachings and messages of this parable are highly relevant to today. The wind and rain can represent trials of life and sin. Similar to the rock that the wise man built his house on, Jesus is reliable and supportive in difficult times. We must build our lives on Jesus as the wise man built his life on the rock, only then will we be protected and guided from hardships. From this parable, we must find the wise builder in ourselves and try to do he did in this parable.

RELATION TO REFORMER
This parable can be linked to John Bosco and his life. Just like the wise builder, Bosco applied Jesus' teachings in his life. His mission was to educate children in the Christian and teachings were grounded on Jesus' practices and actions. He believed that everyday was a chance to good and we should all take each day at a time, without putting off life until the tomorrow.

How a Saint corrected children

As found in this writings to his Salesians 'How a Saint corrected children', John Bosco refers to the treatment of the boys and young men who visited the Oratory. He writes on the Preventative System and how to be an educator; dealing with anger, how to correct a child, ways to make yourself loved, allowing for the thoughtlessness of youth and punishments. His method towards teaching was grounded in patience, reason and responsibility which are still fundamental in the Salesians Sister community today. He writes on his love for the poor and abandoned youth, inspired his priestly actions and how his own experiences are put into practice as an educator. Bosco states that as teachers, the Salesians and himself are friends of the boys and must care for them as a father. "Act like a caring father. You will obtain anything from your children if they realize that you are seeking their own good. Act towards them as a good father who checks his children only from a sense of duty, when reason and justice clearly require it."
A final note is given in this writing, summarising his teachings and ways to be an educator. He stressed the importance of patience and refraining from inflicting punishments upon children. Bosco goes on to state that being an educator isn't easy; only God is it's true master. But we can strive to make ourselves loved through inspiring youth to follow in the footsteps of "Jesus Christ, our Lord, who is our model, our patron, our exemplar in all things, but especially in the education of the young."

The Salesian Preventive System is the educative method developed Saint John Bosco. This system is practised by the Salesians, who reflect on Bosco's experience with poor youngsters and abandoned youth in 19th century Turin. It is based on reason, religion and loving-kindness. According to this system, patience is key when dealing with disobedience. This system essentially teaches pupils to obey not from fear or compulsion, but from persuasion. In this system all force must be excluded, and in its place charity must be the mainspring of action. It is called 'preventative' as it prevents children from growing in 'dysfunctional way'.

Priestly
Bosco was raised very religious, displaying priestly efforts from a young age. His family, although poor themselves, were always supporting the homeless and those less fortunate than them. He visited church on the regular and displayed acts of piety throughout his childhood. As a child, Bosco led prayer in small gatherings on several occasions, which is what encouraged him to become a priest. Bosco was ordained in 1841 and lived out his life in prayer and devotions. He was continuously preaching the messages and actions in the Gospel to those less fortunate than him.

Prophetic
Through teaching youngsters religious values and providing them with an education, Bosco displayed prophetic values. John was a strong believer in educating the young and poor. He established a system of education and shared it with others. He was against teaching with force; he acted patiently and kindly towards his students. John Bosco identified and encouraged boys he believed should peruse priesthood, believing all should have the chance to follow in his footsteps. Bosco taught his Salesians how to care for children and the Preventative System which is still a key system for Salesian in the present.

Kingly
John Bosco, appalled by conditions of prisons, was evoked to do all in his power to prevent street children from ending up there. He met with young street children where they worked and played, befriending them before preaching gospel values and the importance of education to them. With his mother, he provided up to 800 lodgings for abandoned boys. Bosco established an Oratory, where several young boys gathered and was a place they could call home. He was a leader to his Salesians, a community established by him. This group still are lead by Bosco's life mission and actions today.

The population of Turin had increased from 50 000 to 204 000 in the years between 1800-1861 due to the migration of poor country people in search for work in the city. To house the influx of people, several storied apartment buildings were added to already crowded slums, overcrowding most of the northern districts. Sewage drowned the streets inviting diseases spreading throughout communities. Many street children had to resulting to theft and petty crimes to survive. This resulted in the poor being locked behind bars at a young age where the living conditions were even worse. After Bosco visited these prisons, encountering first-hand the appalling living conditions the misguided youth were downcast to, he knew he must prevent young boys from ending up there.

The Condition of Labor (Rerum Novarum), from Pope Leo XIII in 1891
Revrum Novarum lay the foundation for Catholic Church teachings. John Bosco's teachings and actions are reflected throughout Revrum Novarum, which was most likely inspired by his works as it was written two years after his death. Specifically, section 1, part 20, which speaks on justice for workers reflects much of Bosco's life mission. John established several rights for young apprentices in protecting them from mistreatment from employers. He required employers to sign a contract which touched on several sensitive topics in regards to boys labor under their care. Similar to Revrum Novarum, this contract highlighted the importance of workers being employed in their strengths. Section 5, part 42 is about the hours and expectations of the poor. Both Bosco and Revrum Novarum believe that employers should not overwork their workers and children should be cared for and should not be placed in factories and workshops. The teachings of John Bosco are foreshadowed in Revrum Novarum.

Group who models the works of John Bosco
The Salesians of Don Bosco ( officially known as the Society of St. Francis de Sales) are a religious organisation dedicated to the service of poor and abandoned youth. It was named after St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622) during who was known for his kindness and simple spirituality. Founded by John Bosco in the late 19th century. He established, with much difficulty, a place called an Oratory in Turin. The Salesian Society has grown vastly since then and is now the 3rd largest missionary organisation in the world. They practice Bosco's Preventative System, which consists of reason, religion and loving kindness. Similar to John Bosco, they live out the priestly, prophetic and kingly acts of Jesus.

Priestly
As John Bosco did, the Salesians of John Bosco demonstrate priestly qualities. Spending time in prayer and sacrificing themselves for the lengths of others. Salesians of John Bosco have established several schools and parishes throughout Australia, Fi-Ji, New Zealand and Samoa in which they aid poor families and are welcoming to all kinds of people. Through taking in abandoned and poor youth and providing them with an education and home, this group models Bosco and Jesus in priestly works.

Prophetic
The Salesians believe in educating youth so they can grow up to live happily and in life without sin. They continue to enforce the methods of education that Bosco believed in and through this method, have taught hundreds of boys out of love and reason. They have established several schools and colleges throughout the world where young people come to learn and nourish their faith.

Kingly
As Bosco did, the Salesians are leaders to poor and abandoned youth. Welcoming youngsters into their parishes and guiding child criminals away from sin, are ways which they demonstrate the kingly works of Jesus. The Slasean community is one where children are prepared for life, and provided with a playground where they meet with friends and have fun. Several recreation and youth centres are founded and a large number of camps, schools and hostels are founded and inviting to youth.

John Bosco, at just nine years old had a dream that played a considerable role in his future life misssion. John had dreamed that he was in a yard, surrounded by boys living in poverty. These boys were swearing and blaspheming, thus John who was angered by this, struck them with his fists. He was interrupted by a white cloaked man who said; “You will have to win these friends of yours not by blows but by gentleness and love… I want you to teach them the ugliness of sin.” . He later dedicated his life to helping and educating abandoned youth and young offenders. The vivid dream remained etched in John's memories, guiding him in he mission until the day he died.
