Altruistic behaviour, Anger and Agression

Altruistic behaviour is portrayed many times within this movie, not only in Tris's old faction of Abnigation (the self-less faction) dedicated to helping others with nothing in return, but also when a group tries to throw Tris off the edge of a deadly drop when Four steps up and demonstrates Altruistic behaviour. Four does not worry about the danger he may be putting himself in by taking on 4 males by himself but he is determined to help Tris, even if it meant putting himself in danger , then after the fight he takes her to his dorm and helps clean and bandage her wounds trying to help her. This example shows no personal gain for Four but also shows him putting Tris before himself and expressing altruism.

This scene also demonstrates and Anger and Aggression from Al, one of the men who attempted to push Tris. Al intended harm to Tris and acted out in violence because of Jealousy. Jealousy contributed as a trigger for Al because it was a social trigger for Al to act out in violence. Al experiences a frustration process that follows Berkwitz most modified frustration theory of:

Goal -> Goal gets blocked -> Environmental cue -> Frustration or Aggression act
Als goal was to make it into dauntless through the intiation process -> Tris blocked that by moving up the ranks faster -> the gang joining together to get rid of Tris is an environmental cue -> leading to Al and the group being frustrated and acting upon this.

Frustration can cause an emotional trigger of anger and to act out and this is demonstrated from Al.

Group think and decision making

Group think is about following others to create a decision that is optioned by individuals and this is evident when Jennifer has control to overrun abnegation. Jennifer manages Erudite and leads the faction to deciding to overrun abnegation to help maintain the system more precisely because they are the smarter faction. This group think behaviour is effective because the faction is very cohesive, they respect and believe in Jennifer and the group is isolated from other influences from other factions because each faction is sectioned off from another. The below scene shows Tris trying to go against the group decision made by Erudite and dauntless because she is divergent.

Compliance

Compliance is expressed in divergent mainly when portraying the factions. The factions all wear the same clothes and have the same appearance, everyone in that faction chooses to act the same way. Examples of compliance from this movie is when Tris introduces the factions and you see how everyone acts in their faction and explains it is just the way things are. Everyone acts this way willingly to fit in. Another smaller example in this scene is when Tris is seen as a young little girl running through the streets wearing her hair neatly tucked in a bun and plain long grey clothes just as the rest of her faction is seen, she does appear this way willingly she just sees it as the norm.

Social facilitation is present in this movie when Tris performs extremely well in her fear aptitude test when in the presence of higher authority to` the faction system, this is done after Tris has practiced so many times in the simulations that when under the presence of higher authority she reverts to performing well being dauntless rather than divergent.

Conformity

Conformity in Divergent is the idea of the system controlling and forcing conformity for the people into their factions no matter what the cost or the situations. Throughout the movie there are quotes such as "If you can't be brave then clearly you don't belong in dauntless" expressing this idea of everyone must conform to being brave or they won't belong, a motive for people to follow because they are scared of the consequences in this case, being factionless. The main force of conformity is because of the size of the factions, group size is a contributing factor to conforming under pressure the pressure that others have conformed and too fit in like Asches experiment tested. In divergent everyone has to choose a faction that they must fit into. Group cohesiveness is also a factor of conformity and this applies at the choosing ceremony when all the groups are united for this event, this puts pressure on Tris to conform to choosing a faction.

Obedience

A factor of obedience is being in the presence of an authority figure. This is evident in the following scene of Tris fighting Four under the influence of a syrum he still obeys any orders he is given as Jennifer is the authority figure that is controlling this situation and influencing Four to beat Tris and end her life. The close proximity of Jennifer to Four is also heavily influencing him to know that Jennifer is watching him and he must achieve what he was told to do even if it is against his will, just like in Milgrams experiment with the close proximity of the authority figure asking the participants to go against their will.
