There both allow for building skills to advocate for their needs as well as leadership and agency in their classroom.

It is a time for students to share how they are feeling, fun things they did the night before or are doing over the weekend (our Friday chant). It is also a space for us to recite our Class Mission statement and talk about how we will live it out that day. Leadership roles are taking place during this time - we have a student lead the meeting. It really builds community and a sense of family in our classroom.

This section allows for students to ask deeper questions or ask a question that they might not have been comfortable asking during class. We also try to engage students in different ways (use of polls, use of chats, Kahoots, thumbs up/thumbs down, breakout rooms). Keeping things broken up has helped keep students more engaged.

This allows them the opportunity to let go of whatever was bothering them during passing time or in their previous class. They are asked to simply reflect in one to two sentences on what they read. This also allows students to know how each day will start in ELA class to help establish one of our routines.

Our students have been virtual all year - so having consistent routines and keeping learning engaging has been a challenge! Some ideas we've utilized in our classroom are:
*Morning Greeting slideshow: Always start our days with a morning message and response from kids - finding our bitmojis has been one of the faves!
*Lesson Review: Nearpod's Time To Climb games are some of our favorite ways to review content with kids. They can pick their characters, test their knowledge, and compete with their classmates!
*Grade Your Partner: another big favorite in our classroom when we try integrating collaboration among students is the "grade your partner" strategy. We can put kids into breakout rooms and assign tasks, then pop in to check how things are going, and afterwards they give their partners scores! More times than not when we move from group to group, the grades get higher and higher 😁 points are awarded in DOJO.

We may ask what they did for the weekend or if they have anything exciting going on. This gives the students that time to share out with their classmates and really build relationships with them in a positive way. We allow students during work time, even though we are virtual to talk to one another, especially when we are waiting for friends to join us or come back from break. We offer a ton of brain breaks (dance breaks) throughout the day to give them time to refocus.

This can be done by adding them to an anchor chart, powerpoint, or a physical model/item that ties to the topic that day. This also gives students choice in where they direct their attention as they don't have to keep eyes on their teacher for instruction and can look at the visuals instead.
