Mr. Kanamori is a retired teacher in Japan who was featured in the film Children Full of Life in 2003. When watching this film, I was moved and inspired to be more compassionate with my students and to teach them the importance of community. He believes, "Let people live in your heart. When people really listen, they live in your heart forever.” - Kanamori

I believe Whitely articulates the legacy of Annie Leake best when she states in her paper, “Annie Leake Tuttle was one of the pioneering professionals for whom the educational reforms of the nineteenth century made room. Growing up with limited prospects for education or earning a livelihood, she seized the opportunity offered by Normal School training and became one of the new professional female teachers. Motivated by a longing for education and by a desire for financial and personal independence, she found satisfaction in an occupation that also gave scope for her idealism and her sense that Annie’s divine Father had plans for her.” (p. 108 by Marilyn Whiteley)

In 1853, Lewis was the first official female teacher in the province of New Brunswick. Learning about what she had to endure to even be able to attend class shows how persistence pays off. I also admire and am inspired by her bravery, tenacity, and the will she showed while attending courses for her certification.

John Dewey

Dewey's ideas on learning and listening are outlined in the course text, Philosophy of Education (Hare & Portelli 2013). Dewey believes learning is an individual process and that learning cannot be standardized for all. His notion of "learning by discovery" (p.74) is inspirational and challenges me to transform my pedagogy.

I am touched by Freire's words in the interview I read in the book, Philosophy of Education (Hare & Portelli 2013). He talks about teachers needing to have virtues such as love, humility, patience, respect and tolerance. He also reminds teachers to constantly be in the mindset of also seeing themselves as learners referring to ourselves as "teacher learners".

It is inspiring to see how the students were able to develop many skills as they worked on putting together a documentary. He has motivated me to be willing to create more authentic learning situations for my students.
