Chinampas are "floating gardens that were rafts. The Aztecs place these on marshy land around a lake. Chinampas were actually rafts. They were anchored to the bottom of the lake. They made chinampas by piling up vegetation and reeds on top of the raft to help provide good soil. It was hard to harvest food because the gardens were floating in marsh water. The chinampas solved most of the Aztecs problems, but their main problem was to get more land since their population was growing more and more.
https://aztecs.mrdonn.org/floating-gardens.html
