I am fortunate to have grown up in a town commended for its diversity. Growing up, I had close friends of many different races, religions, ethnicities, and even nationalities, so I've been exposed to many different cultures besides mine.

We have a lot of adoptions in my family, with the majority of them being in-family adoptions. My older sister is my second cousin on my dad's side by blood. My aunt on my dad's side and her son were also adopted. We also have a history of grandparents raising children while parents work. My mom was half-raised by my Abuelita, my dad spent the first nine years of his life with his grandparents, and my Abuela raised my sisters' mom and half-brother. I was raised by my mom and dad, who have been married for 38 years.

Depending on who you ask, my family may identify as "mestizo," which is a term used to label people who are mixed Native and Spanish, or "Coyote," which is when you are mixed Hispanic but have more Native blood. My sister is considered Coyote, while I am regarded as Mestizo.

Education has always been the most important thing to my parents, as neither had the opportunity. They chose Burlington Township because of the schools, even though, at the time, they could barely afford to live there. My sister and I were given great opportunities in Township, while children in some neighboring towns were not. For example, Willingboro students receive nothing near what the Township students do. Burlington City, in recent years, has had a rise in the quality of education and opportunities for students, but this was different when I was in school. When they began building nicer, more expensive houses and luxury apartments in the city, people began moving there. Unfortunately, the gentrification of Burlington City is actively pushing out small business owners and neighbors, forcing them to move to towns like Willingboro. In the end, many children who needed these better schools had to leave and begin attending schools even worse than what they had before.
