Amendment I states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

All of these freedoms give the people rights that are protected from government interference.

Freedom of Religion gives the people "religious liberty or freedom" and prohibits the government from establishing a church. This means everyone is allowed to practice whatever religion they want without government interference. For the government, this means there is no religion in the government, they cannot support one religion.

In a Knoxville Police Station, an officer was forced to take down a bible plaque because it was placed in a setting where people can openly see it although the workplace should be religion free. I believe that a bible plaque should not be in a place of work, especially one that relates back to the government, because of all the different religions that workers and visitors study. If the government studied one religion, it would seem like other religions didn't matter. People come to the U.S because it is filled with hope, opportunity, and liberty. Having authorities be one religion while you are another would terrify some, thinking that because they are not the same religion something bad can happen to them. The people of a different religious background could feel threatened or think that all power above them may be against them, considering they do not practice the same religion.

#MyLifeMyPractice #NoReligiousThreat

Knoxville New Sentinel, August 27, 2017, 10:00 am
http://www.knoxnews.com/story/opinion/columnists/2017/08/27/our-first-freedom-government-free-religion/595467001/

Freedom of Religion gives the people the right to form public meetings and form associations without interference from the government.

At a Massachusetts high school, two African American girls were punished for the braid extensions that they had professionally done. They have received detentions, were banished from prom, and kicked off school sports teams. Many students joined the girls in a protest against school officials. In America, people are encouraged to be themselves, to stand up for what they believe in, and to follow their dreams. Most kids are not allowed to do that because of corrupt school systems. When kids are put in to school, some of their rights are taken away. How are high school students suppose to go on to the real world after high school, when the schools protect them from events that are happening out in the world? It is important to stand up for what we believe in and it feels amazing when there are others who support you and the same ideas.

#ProtectTheProtest
#DifferencesMadeTogether

The Washington Post, May 22
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/05/22/black-girls-at-mass-school-win-freedom-to-wear-hair-braid-extensions/?utm_term=.5633a6634e50

Freedom of Petition includes the right to gather signatures in support of a cause a group believes the government has wronged.

People use petitions to support groups or a cause. Some use petitions to help them get what they want and some use it to help others. People have used them in schools for clubs that they may want to start or a teacher who has done many of their students wrong. Petitions are used against the government and laws that are made. Even now people use social media as a way to support something they believe in. On Twitter, many teens use their accounts, asking for "retweets" to help them stop their parents from smoking or to get themselves a new puppy. Petitions are use all over by many people for all kinds of reasons.

#PetitionParty
#UnitedWeSign

Amendment I- Freedom of Press

Freedom of Press allows people to publish their opinions about something without getting in trouble with the government.

The media uses this freedom while doing their jobs. Everyone has their own opinions and views on everything that happens in this world. What is shown in the media is not always true, but it is also not a lie. Depending on what people let the media see, depends on what the media covers. Some of the stories that are shown only show the bad parts of a situation. Most times if the situation starts to die out, the media may try to spark an outrage in the same problem or look for something else to blow out of proportion. Although it is good that the media gets this information out for the world to see , it is not good that the truth can be stretched to make something seem worse than it is.

#ShowUsTheTruth
#FakeNews

Amendment I- Freedom of Speech

This freedom gives people the right to speak their minds and be protected from the government.
This article explains how some Texas cheerleaders at Kountze High School changed banners from sometimes violent messages to religious words of encouragement. An anti-religion group that was located more than 1,000 miles away from this school complained about the school allowing religious speech at school. The principal then banned religious speech which resulted in a lawsuit from the cheerleaders trying to protect their freedom of speech rights. We are given the right to speak our minds, but in school students can get into trouble by saying their opinions. It is important to teach kids to speak up in our world. If no one speaks up about any problems we may have, they will not get fixed. Students should be allowed to voice their opinions in school without having the fear of getting in trouble.

#LetUsSpeak #MyVoiceMatters

The Washington Post, November 4, 2012
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/protect-high-school-students-rights-to-free-speech/2012/11/04/cc507adc-2546-11e2-ac85-e669876c6a24_story.html?utm_term=.268aec729c69
