What I really loved reading about was her mother. She treats patients in the most dire situations. Caring for them as if they are her family. Kind of reminds me of the doctor played by Helena Bonham Carter in Suffragette. I found great similarities between them and I could see the solidarity and unity between the women flourish beautifully. Meena

One part of the story that I can personally relate to is the writer's fear about being trapped at home because of the Taliban’s rules. As an Afghan girl, I deeply understand the fear that the narrator describes. Like her I have seen how the Taliban’s rules take away our freedom, forcing us to stay inside and stopping us from going to school or university. It feels like we are trapped unable to live the lives we dream of. It scares me to imagine a future where I have no freedom to make my own choices. Many Afghan girls like me want to study, work, and choose our own path but every day we face restrictions that make those dreams harder to reach. I hope one day we can all live freely, without fear.

I have experienced times where I had to study or push myself to learn something on my own, but not during the Taliban’s regime or another regime where we were not allowed to study. But at times, for example during COVID-19, when all schools, universities, every place was closed, I experienced this. I had to study on my own, study different school books so I wouldn’t forget the lessons or so I’d be prepared when school reopened after quarantine.

Jackie - I can't relate to it, but it is something I have seen in many places. The Pakistan border guards are afraid of the Taliban, but then as soon as they can they start to harass her father. It's the bully mentality of only picking on those they see as weaker.

That depends on the circumstances. There isn't a universal method because different times call for different ways to battle injustice. Raising one's voice against injustice against a heavily armed and oppressive regime is dangerous. It would be wise to keep a low-profile and create movements in secret.

Sheba

The part I feel related to is I am also thinking about what if the Taliban reign continues for a long time. What will happen to my future after I graduate from AUAF? Will there be any chance I can find a job based on my field in Afghanistan? These questions in my mind make me so desperate and disappointed about my future, and I know if the Taliban stay for a long time, there will be no opportunity for girls to work or get an education.

If I want to raise my voice against injustice and cruelty, I would definitely use this technique to aware people about their rights so that everyone understand that what is their actual right. When people know that, we can all start to raise our voice because one person's voice cannot change anything. Therefore, if we really want to change something, we have to be a large group who want the same thing.

Marwa Qadeer

In my opinion, the best technique to use is writing. Because I think if people protest or speak out loudly, sometimes it can be dangerous, especially in places where people are not free. However, writing can be quiet and powerful at the same time and can make people think and open their eye to what is really is going on.

If I wanted to speak out against something unfair, I'd use the social media for my advantage to raise awareness and gather audience. The only other way to feel heard is doing unharmed protests and advocate for the injustice and unfairness that’s ongoing and raise my voice for the right of women, for the rights of people.
