This is a colleague who is usually very nice and mellow with you and other teachers but in this interaction, you find the tone to be inappropriate and disturbing.

During collaborative planning meeting, expat faculty are often seen as more "expert" or dominant in conversations, while local teachers or teaching assistants may feel their cultural knowledge or pedagogical contributions are undervalued or overlooked.
This perpetuates a hierarchy of knowledge and can harm morale, innovation, and sustainability of human resource (especially local staff). If we are committed to building belongingness, we need to rethink how we can address this challenge.

A staff member makes an offhand remark or a passing comment about another colleague or uses inappropriate language and displays a disrespectful attitude toward them, it can negatively impact the workplace culture.

Building Belonging Across the School Community

Certain pockets of the school (staff members) that refrain from making intentional connections with other members. They do have a prerogative to interact with whom they please but we would like to build on staff comraderies to create and nurture the sense of belongingness within the community.

Plan social events (bowling, whole day picnic,) that intentionally bring teaching and administrative staff together.
Thursday "Lead your Passion Day" (once a month).
Implement "shout out wall" where any staff member (teacher or admin) can leave a thank you note for another staff member or celebrate achievements
Acknowledge contributions in school bulletins, newsletters or assemblies or school magazine
Pair administrative staff with teaching and support staff for school wide events

Shout-out Wall

Create a shout-out wall, some place visible to all, in the cafeteria or school reception.

Here we can celebrate successes - student and staff achievements outside school.

Engage with the leadership team and HR to explore replacing the December and end-of-year evening parties with more inclusive and active social events, such as a daytime picnic or group activities like bowling. Once a preliminary plan is agreed upon, distribute a survey to all staff and administrators to gather diverse input and ensure broad representation in the decision-making process.
