The most cultural shock in Spanish Culture is the different life rhythm from the rest of the Europeans. Spanish people have lunch from 1 to 3 pm, and have dinner at about 10pm. Besides that, it is a commonplace in this culture to take a nap after having lunch.

In 2013 Spain was the fourth’s world visited country, and it is renowned for its festivals as San Fermin, nightlife and musical style such as Flamenco. Another reason to visit Spain is its gastronomy, in which, almost half of the world’s olive oil is made. However, art is very important too in the Spanish culture with artists like Gaudi, Picasso, Miró or Dalí, and writers such as Cervantes.

If you go to Spain, you must know that it is taken for granted to be between ten and fifteen minutes late. Although it is also peculiar to Spanish people greet each other with two cheek kisses.

Hi Steve! What´s up? Julia told me about your following summer holidays in Spain, and I want to share some tips about Spanish customs with you if you don´t mind. First of all, you must know that Spain isn´t only sun and festivals, because there´re remarkable differences between the north and the south, and the coast and the inner areas. You can find beautiful beaches as well as incredible mountains or lovely countryside villages. Furthermore, it will delay your daily schedule due to Spanish getting up later and not having lunch until 14/15 hours. However, the delay is worthwhile because you would enjoy its gastronomy in superb restaurants. Don´t forget to pay a little tip if the meals and the service are appropriate! And after having lunch, it´s customary to take a nap! Lastly, but not least, try to avoid political opinions because nowadays there´re opposite views about time restrictions or how the government is coping with the pandemic. Taken for granted a souvenir when you come back, I hope you enjoy your trip! ;);) Alex

Hello Peter! I'm excited to hear that you are planning to come to Spain this summer. You were telling me the other day that I had to update you on what is customary here to not be out of place. Well, I have to tell you that my idea is that you will get to know some important cities like Madrid, in the centre of Spain and the cradle of all kinds of cultural events. We can also take advantage of these dates and visit other cities such as Pamplona. Have you heard of the San Fermines? You're sure to love gastronomy. Apart from the magnificent ingredients we have, such as olive oil, you will love everything you eat. You'll see... That's right! You will have to get used to the fact that here we eat later than in Germany. Usually around 2 p.m. A visit to the beach is also a must. The sun is our most precious commodity. I am sure we will have a great time. Just bring comfortable shoes. I will make sure you eat well and enjoy yourself. We keep in touch, Gema

50 Spanish Realities

This brochure states that there are essential Spanish realities. Moreover, Spain is a well-known travel destination for tourists. The figures show that Spain is the fourth most visited country in the world. To cite one example, Spanish is spoken in Spain and Catalan, Basque, and Galician are co-official languages spoken in the Kingdom of Spain. Spain is undoubtedly a Kingdom, so it is shown in its official name. Another illustration of reality to be taken into account is having lunch, which is different from other European countries. Here, having lunch between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. is the most common custom. "Siesta", a short sleep during the afternoon, is part of daily life. Traditions, such as the running of bulls in Pamplona, are well-known worldwide and a worldwide artist, such as Pablo Picasso, who contributed to expressionism, cubism and surrealism.
Moreover, we have to claim that "flamenco" is a kind of music and not a kind of dance known in the whole world. One might speculate that all these facts are essential to be known. Tourists come from all over the world, and they mustn't suffer from a cultural shock.

Hi Maria, how are you doing? I'm so glad you finally decided to come and visit us in Spain! But first I'm going to give you some advice as Spain is very different from your country. First and foremost are our mealtimes. Compared to many countries, in Spain we eat lunch and dinner later, with lunch at around 2 pm and dinner at about 9 or 9:30 pm, so keep an eye on the opening hours of bars and restaurants. And bear in mind that many establishments close at siesta time. You should also know that although everyone thinks that the weather in Spain is perfect, depending on the seasons in which you travel, sometimes we also get cold (especially if you decide to come to the north). Although Spain has a lot to see, I recommend you to visit some of our fantastic beaches if you are travelling in summer. And don't forget to greet people with two kisses on the cheek.

Hi Jen!

What new? As you told me last week that you are planning to visit Spain next summer, I would like to warn you about some customs, not to find those things completely alien, when visiting the country.

To start it´s crucial you to know that there are 4 official languages in the country and not every Spaniard speaks Castilian which means commonly “Spanish” so depending on the region you are going to visit you could have some difficulties to understand the language. But don´t worry it´s taken for granted that people will try to communicate with you, we used to be friendly persons. And that leads me to my second point.

Spaniards are warm and it´s commonplace to use gestures with words or the touching to express ourselves. For instance, it´s typical to greet making cheek kisses. We also speak a lot, quickly and quite loudly so don´t be afraid they are not being rude! It´s also routine when you are new in the town to be invited to a drink and you have to know that it´s quite inappropriate to say no to the invitation.

And finally, you have certainly heard about Spanish lively nightlife and it sounds like a stereotype but it´s not. The country is renowned for its several festivals. One of the most famous is San Fermín (“running of the bulls”) in Pamplona but there are plenty of festivals all around the country you will surely enjoy!
Take care
See you soon
Sonia
