Aside from the aesthetically intriguing colonial design, Lawang Sewu’s tragic past has made this a point of attraction. In 1942 it was used as a prison by Japanese Invaders where several prisoners were executed. In 1945, this building was the focus of the 5 day battle of Semarang, where Indonesia’s Independence fighters were killed fighting against Japanese soldiers. Five employees working there were also killed and a monument has been erected in the yard to commemorate the national heroes.

In 2011 Lawang Sewu was inaugurated by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono and re-opened to public after extensive renovations. Buildings A and B of the complex are open to public for tours and are frequently used fo social and cultural activities and events. A historical and architectural icon of the city of Semarang, Lawang Sewu is not to be missed.

A dish that is similar to the spring roll, the Lumpia has a sweet yet savory taste and is filled with bamboo shoots, egg, chicken or shrimp. It can either be served in a soft wrap or deep fried, with a side of delicious thick brown sauce, freshly cut spring onions, birds eye chili and lettuce. A delicacy of Semarang which was derived from Tiong Hoa origins, it is no wonder that the best Lumpia can be found in this small corner of Chinatown next to the Tay Kak Sie temple. When you come here, make sure to line up early as the stall can be crowded with people looking to buy the famous lumpia as souvenir.

A) About Kota Tua

Kota Tua is surely not a stranger to anyone. Its historical background and dutch style architecture has stolen everyone’s attention. Its long history started in 1526 when Fatahillah was sent to attack the Pajajaran Empire’s Sunda Kelapa Harbor, and turn it into Jayakarta. But it didn't stop there, the VOC destroyed Jayakarta under the order of Jan Pieterszoon Coen and turned it into a new city called Batavia a year later. Thus the reason behind its dutch style architecture. Kota Tua is also loaded with museums – completing the fact that it's a silent witness for history. It holds all sorts of museums throughout the spectrum: Museum Fatahillah, Museum Seni Rupa dan Keramik, Museum Bank Mandiri, Museum Wayang, and Museum Bank Indonesia which all hold their own history. All sorts of activities can be done in Kota Tua, starting from ceramic making, seeing all the currencies and moneys from time to time, watching a wayang show and seeing different types of wayangs, get a glimpse of Jakarta’s past, rent a bicycle and tour around Kota Tua, and so much more. So much excitement awaits you in Kota Tua, it’s most definitely a great place to spend time in!

In terms of culinary, Kota Tua's cuisine sure is no less interesting than its other aspects. One of the signature foods of theirs is Kerak Telor, which is also native to the Betawi people who originated in the area. The Kerak Telor itself tastes savory with a touch of sweetness with the texture of glutinous rice. The unique taste of Kerak Telor comes from white glutinous rice, chicken/duck egg, salted dried up shrimp which is roasted and mixed with fried onions, softened coconut that is roasted, chili pepper, aromatic ginger, ginger, pepper, salt, and sugar. Not only does it have a unique taste, it also is made with very unique steps and techniques. The chicken/duck egg would be cracked into a pan without any oils, Then when it's half-cooked, the pan will be flipped upside down facing the burning charcoal in the Anglo. When the surface of the egg is burnt, The Kerak Telor will be sprinkled by the seasonings and toppings then it will be ready to serve. What's interesting, though, is that the Kerak Telor was made accidentally when the Betawi people were trying to get as much use as possible from coconuts. In the 1970s the Betawi people started selling them commercially, and people liked them! It's easy for you to get a taste of this appetizing Kerak Telor, they can be found everywhere in Kota Tua.

Kempinski is one of the familiar hotels in Jakarta. This hotel is located in the Thamrin area, Central Jakarta. This hotel has a history of more than 50 years. Kempinski is the first hotel in Indonesia built to international standards. Kempinski’s base was still the real one until now, but some parts of the Kempinski building were replaced with new parts. So not everything is original from the beginning. Kempinski was made by Indonesia's first president, Soekarno, on August 5, 1962. However, the current owners of Kempinski are Budi Hartono and Bambang Hartono. There are many room types in Kempinski, such as Diplomatic Suite, Residence Suite, and more. You can see the other types in Kempinski's website.

To reach Kota Tua, you have three choices to go. First, you can either go to Bundaran Hotel Indonesia with an MRT from Stasiun Blok M BCA, then take a busway to Kota Tua from there on. Second, you can go to Busway from Halte Blok M straight to Halte Busway Kota. Third, you can take a train from Tanah Abang and head for Stasiun Jakarta Kota. The first choice will cost you Rp. 8.000,00 for the MRT and Rp. 3,500,00 for the busway, the second will cost you Rp. 3,500,00, and the third will also cost you Rp. 3,500,00. The first choice is recommended because you can also take a look around the Blok M Plaza mall, experience the MRT, and get a hotel once you arrive in Bundaran HI, then continue your journey to Kota Tua. The second choice would be a great choice when you don’t want to spend too much money because it’s cheap. The third choice is recommended for people who are familiar with the Tanah Abang Station, it’s just as cheap as the second choice but it is likely for you to get lost because the Tanah Abang Station is a big and confusing station.

To reach Malioboro, there’s a lot of transportation that you can use. The first one is Delman. Delman is a type of transportation that uses horse for moving the transportation. It’s a traditional form of transportation in Java. Next one is Becak. Becak is also a traditional transportation in Java. Becak is quite similar to Pedicab and Trishaw. The next one is a common transportation that a lot of people know, it’s a Taxi! People can use taxis to reach Malioboro. You can also walk to Malioboro if you want, or use a motorcycle which in Indonesia, we call it ‘Ojek’. I would recommend you to use traditional transportation for your experience, but it’s okay if you guys prefer using online transportation.

Mbah Lindu doesn't even remember how long she's been selling gudeg. However, Mbah Lindu remembers well that she sold before having a husband, during the colonial era. The place for selling from the past until now has not changed, namely on Jalan Sosrowijayan, precisely at the front post of the Grage Ramayana Hotel. It is only about 300 meters from Malioboro Street.
