Nossa Senhora da Graça or Saint Mary of Graces is a devotion to the Virgin Mary in the Roman Catholic Church. Several churches with this dedication often owe their foundation to thankfulness for graces received from the Virgin Mary. It is also related to the Marian apparitions in which was revealed the Miraculous Medal, also known as the Medal of Our Lady of Graces. In this particular church, ther are early images of Saint Vincent and ground level ruins of the major sections of the old fort too.

The History of Ponta de Sagres
During the second half of the fifteenth century, the Fortress of Sagres became the expansion center of the portuguese navy. It received visits from scholars and navigator’s from a wide range of nationalities.

The army from the corsair Francis Drake attacked Sagres in 1587, sacking it violently and burning it. After this attack, in which several fortifications were seriously damaged, it was considered the idea of modernising the fortress. It was modernised in 1631 by Felipe IV de Castella, following the plans of Alexandre Massai, an italian engineer.

In 1755, the Fortress of Sagres was damaged once again, but this time because of a tsunami. It wasn’t repaired until the reign of Maria I de Portugal (1777-1816), who replaced the medieval fortress walls and adapted them to the defense necessities of that era.
