The book "Persepolis" is a graphic novel. The book is not organized in the order of events. It is organized in the way that the author thinks of the events. The author uses the organization of the book to convey a message that is very powerful. She uses the pictures in the book to describe the emotions of the characters. They are also used to show how the war was like and the way that it affected the world. For example she uses the organization to show social class is very impactful in the book.

In the quote it talks about how the maid was not able to eat with them. This was due to the social classes. Marji's maid was poor therefore she was in a lower social class. It says that you are not supposed to mix or interact with social classes that you are not associated with. It is social class that identifies a person's struggles. Just like how Mehri could not eat with the family.

In the quote it talks about how Marji is being told a story and she says " so he became a communist." In the story the prime minister states that it disgusts him, the thought of having social classes. He thinks that they are unfair. So, communism would be fair because everyone gets the same thing, therefore there would be no rankings.

In this quote Marji talks about her "shame" in the matter. She thinks that it is not okay for their to be different social classes. She feels that everyone should be treated the same not matter how rich or poor. No matter how young or old. She also states that " The reason for my shame and for the revolution is the same." This means that social class ranking got so out of hand that it caused her shame and caused a revolution. A revolution started because a change was wanted and needed.

Since they are poor they are the ones chosen to go away. It is also due to their age. They would not send a man, because they are not as easy to convince.

I can analyze how my cultural experience shapes my interpretation of the text.

I thought that it was very interesting to learn about someone's culture and life from a different perspective. I think that since I had never been in the position that Marji is in, I would not have as much understanding. It was difficult at some points to comprehend their struggles. I have never experienced the effects of social class. In my culture there may be some type of social class. For example of the upper, middle, and lower class. I think that the way that the people are separated is the same as in the culture in the book. I think that I would fall in the middle class. This is because my family is not wealthy but we are not poor. The social class in my culture is not as much as an impact. We are not classified by the social class we are in. I think the way that I interpret the book is impacted by the fact that I haven't been through what the characters have been through.
