A good way to understand antibiotic resistance is by first understanding the process of natural selection.
Natural selection is when an organism carries a certain genotypic characteristic; it enables the organism to adapt to its surroundings easier, thus enabling it to survive while others without the genotypic characteristic may die off. If they're able to survive, they're able to reproduce, increase in numbers, and therefore perpetuate genotypic qualities to succeeding generations.

Affecting every continent on the planet, Antibiotic Resistance is becoming a major threat. As selective pressure is continually put on bacteria, those with a genetic change or intrinsic resistance are able to resist the potency which it was subjected to, thus becoming antibiotic resistant.
It is important to understand that humans do not become resistant to certain antibiotics; bacterium does. It is the bacteria that may infect humans or animals.

Unless significant action is taken soon, one of the pillars we have all built our societies on will be gone. Minor injuries and common infections will have the chance to kill again; we will be in a post-antibiotic era.

Developing countries will be wiped out. Expecting mothers and children will be in extreme danger. Common procedures and surgeries will become impossible to perform. Everyday life will soon come to a screeching halt.

Governments around the world need to set the pace for which their communities follow in stopping antibitoic resistanc.

Provide healthcare workers and volunteers with the correct information for prescribing antibiotics

Incentive research and development for new antibiotics

Teach individuals the importance of prevention and control

Relay the message to their citizens: prevention and control starts with individuals. Washing hands and covering noses and mouths when sneezing are simple, yet effective ways.
