Long ago in the Philippines, there once lived a young girl named Maria whose mother died. Her father remarried a widower named Junana who had two daughters Rosa and Damiana. Who treated her like a servant in her own house.

One day, Prince Malecadel announced that he would be hosting a ball, and the most beautiful woman would be his wife. Maria was sad because she knew she would be unable to attend the ball because she did not have a dress. While she was weeping, a crab came up to her and told Maria she was her mother. Then Juanan came behind her, saw the crab, and ordered her to capture it for dinner. Maria was forced to cook it but before she did, the crab spoke to her saying, "Maria, don't eat my flesh, but collect all my shell after I am eaten, and bury the pieces in the garden near the house. They will grow into a tree, and you can have what you want if you will only ask the tree for it."

The next day a beautiful tree appears in her backyard. The tree grants her wishes for a beautiful gown and coach. she goes to the ball and the prince dances with her the whole night, but she arrives house before 12, or else the prince will see that she is a poor maid. There's a ball the next day too, the tree grants her wishes but this time gives her golden slippers. As the clock strikes 12, Maria runs from the ball leaving her slipper. The prince finds it and makes all the ladies try it on. Maria tried on the shoe and it fit her, then her and the prince lived happily ever after.
