When women sing to rap or hip-hop the media and some music fans attack their talent. Music and gender intersect in the music that I listen regularly by having in my playlist mostly men than women. Women are still fighting in today’s world to win a spot in the music world. Most of the women’s songs on my playlists are pop. People still have this idea that women should be singing to soft music like pop. Men can say horrible things about women in their lyrics, but women say horrible things about men and the whole world goes crazy.

I listen to reggaetón or pop. In the reggaetón world, the musicians talk horrible things about women. They talk about sex and having many girls. For example, one song that I remember talks horrible about women is 4 Baby’s from Maluma. He was criticized by many people for the lyrics in the song. Maluma and three other trap artists sing this song, but Maluma’s parts are softer compare to the other artists. In one verse he says: “I’m in love with four babies, They always give me what I want, F*** me when I tell them to, None of them gives me excuses.” I’m not going to out the other parts of the song because the lyrics are explicit, and they are just a big NO. On Billboard.com, the Billboard staff states, that there was a petition on Change.org “demanding the song’s removal from digital platforms as it “demeaning to women.” I’ve also heard in the radio this song, but they only put a beep. While a Mexican-American artist that now sings to urban music, Becky G. was criticize a lot and was even told to change the lyrics of the song before she performed in a program. By the way Maluma also sang his song in an awards show and they only put the beep sound. While in Becky G’s case they made her change a single part of the song that says, “I like them bigger, Those who don’t fit in my mouth.” The author of "Becky G Censored" in Latin Times states that “The singer was forced to change up some words to make them more appropriate for general audience.” The lyrics were changed to “I like them bigger that with a kiss on the mouth will make me fly in the air and make me go crazy.”

For example, we start to see that women are trying to sing more in hip-hop and in rap. There are some certain music genres were men do want to see women, for example pop. Also, when I listen to regional Mexican music, I see that men are the ones more involved. Women cannot be explicit in their lyrics because other people may see it as not lady like. While men must show their manliness, while talking mean things about women. The women on the music videos must show their bodies so they can be a model in a music video. It is now rare to see women fully cloth in a music video.

This matters to me because people cannot see women progressing no matter in what era we are. Women try really hard to fit in to be perfect in this world that always seems to try and criticize them. Many people including women do not like to see women rap, but they do not realize that they can open doors to other young ladies.
