Rather than promoting educational discourse and debate, people are encouraged to adhere to the status quo. As a result, this creates a hostile environment for those who have differing opinions and stifles individuality and curiosity as it discourages exploration of topics that are deemed socially taboo. These quotes demonstrate instances in the novel in which curiosity or open discourse about topics were discouraged or outright eliminated.
