John Smeaton survey's a route for the canal.

Before a canal can be constructed, the route has to be carefully planned to work its way through the landscape. This is the job for surveyors. They need to make sure that the canal reaches industries and areas where it can support the most traffic while also staying as level as possible, through a landscape full of natural obstacles such as hills and valleys.

work on the canal begins when canal company digs the first spade full out of the eastern sea lock. Very hard work to dig out heavy wet earth, wages were only 10D (0.04 p) per day.

Construction work included making the canal watertight with clay puddle, and building locks (seventy feet long and twenty feet broad, with a rise of eight feet), embankments, culverts, sluices, aqueducts and bridges where required. Reservoirs and feeder channels supplied water, and a towpath, wharves, basins, stables for horses and houses for lock-keepers or other employees were also constructed.

water was first let into the canal up to hamiltonhill basin. But due to lack of funds the work on the canal was brought to a halt till 1785 when the government forfeited money from the jacobite estates and the canal continued its works to extend to bowling through the clyde.

As well as providing a shorter and less dangerous journey between the East and West coasts for sea-going vessels, it furnished a commercial avenue for Central Scotland, conveying goods of all types, including coal, timber, iron, tin, copper, earthenware, beef, pork, flour, barley, wine sugar, tobacco and textiles,

Much industry was attracted to the canal, the first being shipbuilding, which took place at such locations as Falkirk, Kirkintilloch, Hamiltonhill, Maryhill and Bowling. There followed foundries, ironworks, engineering plants, distilleries and factories of various types, including glass and chemicals, sites occurring at such places as Bainsford, Wyndford, Kirkintilloch, Possil, Firhill and Port Dundas. the fourth and clyde canal was finally opened. The canal served three main purposes through its prosperous years.

to provide a route for vessels going from east to west
for the fast and stable movement of goods.
it was also a safe and quick way for travellers to move around scotland.

after the discovery of steam power the canal had to shut due to its faster competitor, trains powered by steam engines. ironic because the first practical steam powered vehicle was built for the fourth and clyde canal itself.

carriage exhibit

the first exhibit showcases a carriage, a mode of transport used when the original building was built. as a matter of fact there is a carriage entrance on one side of the building, not something that is commonly seen!! Unfortunately the entryway has been blocked off for years due to it's lack of usage. I have made a design decision to restore this entryway to nod to how old this building is, one of the oldest buildings standing on any Scottish canal.

canal boat folk art

canal boats tend to have a specific painted art style which requires much skill to make. Common motifs found in canal boats are roses and castles. These motifs probably stem from traveller culture.

historians have also identified similarities with folk art from Germany, Holland and even Asia. Wherever it came from, the reason for its popularity and growth is certainly tied to the limited size of the boat cabin, the pride of the boat people and the competition between the canals and the railways.
