One of Alonso's Lords. One of the people stranded on the island. He is loyal and trustworthy. He is kind and caring to the people with him.

Knowledge

There is knowledge in exploitation even though it may not be the right thing. When Prospero arrived on the island, he met the Caliban. They exchanged information and told each other about knowledge. Prospero then proceeds to enslave Caliban and make him work for him. The knowledge the Caliban shared gets repaid by him getting enslaved.

Power

There is power through oppression even thought the treatment may be unjust. Ariel is rescued from Sycoraxy's spell by Prospero but in return for the freedom, Ariel has to serve Prospero for a year. Once the year is over, Ariel wants to be done serving but Prospero keeps reminding him that he was the one that freed him and the one who got him here. It says in the play, "Thou did promise To bate me a full year." (Shakespear.1.297-298)

Perspective

You can shape a perspective by manipulation even when the manipulation is biased towards a side. Prospero keeps his past a secret to Miranda so she only has one perspective of the world. Prospero decides to keep Miranda away from all the other world problems so she doesn't have a different view of the world around her.

Act 2

Power: When somebody offers themselves to serve you, they lack work and a better life even if that means leaving everything behind. In Act 2 Scene 2 of The Tempest, Caliban offers himself unto Stephano and Trinculo. He did this because of the life he had before, which was working for Prospero like a slave. Once, he saw a better life with Trinculo and Stephano. "These be fine things, an if they be not sprites. That’s a brave god and bears celestial liquor. I will kneel to him." (Shakespeare 2.2.120-123). Just by them having liquor already made the Caliban want to serve them as he had none and had to work lots.

Perspective: If you value someone more than suffering and being employed, you will work harder to achieve recognition by the person except when the person they are seeking recognition from doesn't care much about their efforts. Ferdinand, the person in love with Miranda, went out and gathered logs because he thought doing a lot would help him receive recognition from Miranda. "I had rather crack my sinews, break my back, Than you should such dishonor undergo While I sit lazy by." (Shakespeare 3.1.31-33). He would rather work hard and diligently than have Miranda work so she can sit and do nothing while he does all of the work to prove to her that he is worth of her.
