- Terman: an educational psychologist promoted the use of the intelligence wanted to see why intelligent kids were more intelligent
- Thurstone: studied the primary mental abilities test (1938) measured human intelligence 

-Standardization: test is given to "sample" group first ; defines meaningful scores
