Parent-Child Interaction Therapy – also called PCIT – is an evidence-based, short-term treatment that is designed to help young children with highly disruptive behaviors that effect them at home, school, daycare, or various social environments. This therapy is indicated for children with oppositional behaviors that are sometimes physical, or simply just defiance, and not listening to their parents commands or requests. It's also highly effective for children with separation anxiety or generalized anxieties, attention deficit issues, autism, or who have gone through traumatic experiences.
In PCIT the therapist works with each parent to strengthen their relationship with their child and build their confidence as well as their ability to effectively direct, and instill new positive behaviors. The parent is also taught how to effectively set limits, calmly discipline, and follow through with consequences. It helps restore positive feelings to their everyday interactions with their children. PCIT treats both the parent and the child. Most importantly it helps change their interactions and greatly improve their relationship!
