Language Clarification

There has been some confusion in discussions around voting whether it is 75% of the staff OR 75% of the staff who vote. I support this change, but I think we should also take the opportunity to clarify the language around what that percentage means.

Amendment

I am opposed to the amendment because, while it is always desirable to hear from as many voices as possible, we cannot hold good ideas hostage to the apathy of others. There is already a perception among some in the building that the proposals that are showing up are things that we should be doing/used to do. The issue is that they are not being followed or enforced by some staff and even some administrators. The issue we will continue to have whatever we decide to do is the obstinancy of some adults in the building to refuse to adapt current practices to support proposals and polices even if they reach consensus.

Votes that get cast either way should determine the outcome. Essentially, participant apathy or actively choosing not to vote could stall any efforts to make changes or move forward in a meaningful way. This committee has always been open to any/all staff and anyone can make a proposal or amendment or vote on a proposal.

Staff Quorum

This committee, to my understanding, was created in order to encourage staff unity and to ensure that adopted policies have support from a majority of the staff. A threshold or a quorum would encourage whole-staff conversations and (hopefully) result in a more united staff opinion which would then be reflected in the final vote.

I speak in favor of both the original proposal and the 1st amendment. Its time to move forward, but not without strong buy in among the staff. The original proposal would help move this committee forward with a 2/3 bar for passing proposals instead of the 75% the handbook requires. It seems like a strong majority support that. Instead of moving forward, we are now stalled on the amendment to require 60% participation for a vote to count. There is a lot of concern over lack of participation stalling progress. The amendment allows for that: 40% of the staff can opt to not vote and we move forward still with enough voices to have buy in. Let's entertain the option of re-voting if a proposal passes with 2/3 support but fails to meet the 60% participation threshold. Let's make voting as easy and simple as possible- maybe instead of negotiating the Canvas page (not easy for most staff who have not been attending meetings but still need to vote), an email with a link can go out from Mr. Johnson or the committee to the staff with the proposal and voting deadline clearly stated.

Don't we have to follow contract language?

I am wondering if this even needs to be up for discussion. We are required to follow contract language and the historical HHS model is not consistent with the new contract. It doesn't seem like this should even be voted on, because we are basically voting to follow the contract (which is required already.)

voting will be by google form that is sent to your email. hopefully that makes things super easy for people. In addition, the proposal will be in the google form, so people will know exactly what they are voting for as well.
