What are 'jazz standards'?

There are many well-known songs in jazz, called jazz standards. However, rather than listening to the same version every time, each musician or band will play their own version of it. They usually start with the familiar melody, then different soloists will improvise over the chord structure so you can't hear the original anymore.

Jazz has been around for a very long time - over 100 years - and in that time there have been many many jazz styles such as ragtime, Dixieland, swing, be-bop, cool... take time to listen to the huge variety. You don't need to know the styles, but it will give you a sense of perspective.

Jazz was developed along with blues by the African-Americans whose ancestors had been slaves just the generation before them. The music combines rhythms from Africa and harmonies from Europe.
