Most of the migrations were due to the Cuban revolution, which was lead by Fidel Castro. Many also left as the Cubans allied themselves with the Soviet Union. Most that left were in Cuba’s educated upper and middle class. Miami became the preferred destination.

1. Immigration Wave - Due to the Cuban Revolution many left Cuba at the same time. From 1960 to 1979, hundreds of thousands of Cubans left Cuba to come to America.

2. Push Factor - One of the biggest push factors was the Cuban Revolution. Many did not agree with the new Dictator causing them to leave the country.

3. Asylum - The some Cubans fled their country to see asylum in the United States as it would give them a safer and more “free” life.

4. Chain Migration - After many saw that it I was a viable option to leave Cuba they would follow suit and leave as well. One person would leave and as a result family and friends would see and leave and so on a so forth.

5. Pull Factor - The United States is a free country with many job opportunities contrary to to that of Cuba which was the opposite so America was intriguing for many.

6. Kinship Links - Many migrants ended up in Miami and would settle down there as a result other family members leaving Cuba would know this and also settle down there.

1) The majority of migration happens short distance. When the Cuban migration was going on, the United States had a “wet foot dry foot” policy. This made it so that any refugees caught at sea would be sent back, whereas all who made it to land could stay. This made them most likely to take as short a journey as possible to Florida.
2.) Counter migration. The United States had very little, if any, migration towards Cuba as there was almost no destination and it was also a part of the red scare of communism during the period.
3.) Long distance would promote travel to big cities. The most common destination was Miami. It was a large city and it had the pull factor where would be easy to find work while also remaining fairly close by, a perfect balance for the risk taken.
4.) Urban residents migrate less. When Cuba had a regime change, there were few urban areas and this caused the residents to be more likely to migrate than other countries.
5.) Families tend not to move internationally. Many of the migrations had families. There was a common push factor that they feared the lack of ability of their children to have the best chance if they were to stay in Cuba. 14,000 children successfully migrated between late 1960 and 1962 alone.
